this is so great to have a female group. sometimes i think i'm nuts to have this love affair with sailboats. i have been in situations working on the boat or sailing alone when i have thought maybe quilting or something would be a better hobby!! i love the sailor life and love living on my boat. i'm in redondo beach calif now and am leaving on jan 15th to sail for a month with my 27 yr old son. he bought a boat in florida and is going to cruise for a year and i convinced him to take mom along for the first month! merry christmas ladies and happy sails!

Melissa, thanks for your comments, they are well taken. I had to think about this for awhile and as I do, I remember there were many boats up here in Canada that were built in the 70s & 80s that experienced the "osmosis" problem. There were also numerous boats that came from the US experiencing the same problem. Most of these boats did have a few coats of barrier resisns before the anti-fouling paint was applied. However, at this point I don't know what type of resins were used by the contractors who peeled the bottoms down & then built them up again. I have been assured that the barrier resins being used on my bottom for this job is the newest/best available today.......I certainly hope this is true. There are several boats at my marina that are/had their botoms done over the last few years. Again, most are from the late 70s & 80s. From what I have been able to determine, very few boats built in the late 90s & early 2000 have been afflicted. I know about 20 yrs ago there was a real controvery between the boat manufacturers & resin manufacturers as to who was at fault.......don't think that ever got resovled........it was the boat owners who took the brunt of the expenses. Anyway, I am looking forward to spring and a "great bottom"

Sailorgilrca - Osmosis blister are caused by an number of factors. The biggest one are those boats built during the late 1970's-1985 oil crisis when boat manufacturers use a different resin formula to cut cost from the high cost of resigns. Early Valiants come to mind. The other production boats Catalina, Hunter and those that went out of business (40% of the boat industry) also used this inferior product. I believe your boat fits in this range of boats. Moreover, most boats are not barrier coated and just bottom painted when new and done in the latter years of the boat. Hence we have major type of blisters that appear on the bottom of these boats. Some are cosmetic while others are more serious and require an expensive peel. Most the new boats manufacture today have a new formula the helps prevent these blisters from happening. Caution to the wise, make sure you bottoms is well protect with a barrier coat and good bottom paint. I know on my Hunter if I put a barrier coat before 5 years it will void the warranty. Trust me after 5 years, I will put on a barrier coat and new bottom paint to avoid any future problems. Most of these blisters are from polyester resins and not epoxy resins. Epoxy resins you will find on the more expensive production or custom made boats.

As a single female sailor.....I have been having some boat issues. Firstly, I had planned to list my boat either this fall or early spring. My hopes are to find a boat in the 32-34 ft range for liveaboard. I must explain that I am in Canada. Last fall when my boat was hauled there was some osmosis. This fall when my boat was hauled the situation was obviously worse. Wanting to sell my boat I seemed darned if I did or did not have the bottom redone. I knew that regardless I will never recoup my expenditure. In today's market, there are many crazy so called boat buyers out there.......I made the decision to have the bottom redone which was a $5K amount that I had not budgeted for. Regardless I have no doubt I have made the correct decision here. My question: anyone else even in warmer waters experienced that same thing and how did you deal with this???

Well, I got my fuel polished as they call it...in non sailor talk..it got cleaned. I was worried as Ladye arrives tomorrow...

.I think it will be too cold to sleep on the boat, and my home is so close.

Also the Cowdens, Donna and Doug from Charleston, are coming on Sat. Doug is going to give ne a bid on making a companionway door for me...I hate the slide ins when I use the boat as a condo

There is a boat parade Sat. eve.

I want to wish all our members HAPPY THANKSGIVING...i AM HAPPY AND THANKFUL TO MEET NEW FRIENDS, AND LEARN MORE ABOUT MY BOAT..
