Mile 10,000 on our passage to Barcelona

Posted on October 26, 2009 at 8:30am 4 Comments

It was as if the weather was trying to tell us something. After days of rain and gusty winds in Mallorca we started to listen. We figured it was time to move on so we decided to aim our bow towards Barcelona.

Our last stop in the Balearics was our favorite port: Andratx where we met Terry, a local diver that lives on a cat and owns a few mooring balls.

He was kind enough to… Continue

Mallorca in September weather

Posted on September 24, 2009 at 11:00am 5 Comments

So far, passages in the Med have all been quite pleasant. Going from Sardinia to the Balearics was no exception. This time, we even had the opportunity to “buddy sail” with another boat going in the same direction.

Norbert’s “Mandula” is on its way to the starting line of the ARC, the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers that takes over 200 yachts from the Canaries to the Caribbean in November.… Continue

Between Italy and France: the Straits of Bonifacio

Posted on September 16, 2009 at 3:00am 3 Comments

There are certain things we take for granted on Can Drac. The fridge is one of them. We figured that out when a defrosting session went wrong. You see, when you use sharp knives to chip away at the ice forming around the freezer plates you run the risk of breaking something. So that’s what happened to us. Of course, nothing breaks during business hours when you are at a marina next to an expert that can fix it before your beer goes cold. For us, it… Continue

Do you have air conditioning on your boat ....was 32 degrees celcius in June when I was in Alicante ....too hot ...my friends just back from Alicante last week and said it was 37degrees! Most uncomfortable in a marina ..is it any better anchored off? Want to bring my boat over to the Costa Brava in 2 years time but have to figure out how to keep cool and how to keep the mosquitoes at bay! All advice welcome!

Hi
Thanks for welcome. Will have some photos soon. Trying to get steering wheel locks. Beneteau stopped fitting 6 months ago. Goiot make steering---which there is excessive play in port wheel--on the list--and refuse to reply to email. Assume they are holiday like rest of France.
regards
Michael

Steve Knight replied to Dean W. Martin's discussion 'Hand bearing compass'
The pistol grip with the extended lubber marks is useful for accurate fixes when trying to determine, for instance, if you're dragging anchor over time.  The hockey puck is nice for racing, like when determining whether you can lay the…

I have a pistol grip style and its easy to use.  It just seems to be "natural" as an extension of your arm.  But I haven't used it in a few years.  By the time I find it and pick it up its quicker and easier to stand up…

Back to Work

Enough foolishness, it is time to get the to do list caught up. At least that was today's intention; to be honest it was on the back burner while I allowed other thoughts, hopes and dreams take a precendance. It is just so easy to get discouraged. Duh?So, with a vengence I made a note to myself and pasted it in strategic places around the house. Get SPRAY ready to go . . .Get the house ready to rent . . . Work out, eat right, stick to the plan. . .At least I drove by West Marine to pick up a…See More

Hand bearing compass

Anyone wish to share there preference on hand bearing compass?  Practical Sailor recommends a puck style over pistol grip. Just asking those active sailors with an opinion to share.See More
