Sailing Season

Posted on March 23, 2013 at 5:11pm 1 Comment

Well, except for the forecast snow Monday, sailing season is pretty much here!! in the Middle Chesapeake. My sails are furled, ready to unfurl and hoist!!!!

Work continues on Mirage, a Columbia 8.7. Bulkheads cut and ready to install, soft decks under reconstruction. Hull ready to receive new paint. Engine rebuilt, new prop shaft. Might even splash her this year. (fingers crossed.

See you on the water!!!!!

You knew it couldn't last!!

Yeah, I did it. I took some of the cash from the sale of the Sabre, and bought another boat. A Columbia 8.7. Almost the same exact boat that I sail now. Just two years younger. The owner died, his son didn't have the wherewithal to maintain it. The sails blew off into the Poquoson River, and the boat broke free of her dock lines. She ended up across the creek, partially lying…

I've been working on my Columbia Sabre for the past six weeks, making her nice for her new owner. Most of the work was interior cabinetry and cosmetic. I had to replace bunks, cabinet faces, counter tops, and I painted all of the wood work save two bulkheads and trim, bright white. It really perked up the interior.

While I was at it, I built a new sliding hatch, new lazerette…

Rebuilding a 1979 Columbia 8.3 sailboat/August 3

Posted on September 3, 2010 at 6:36pm 0 Comments

Since I had to be in Deltaville anyway, to secure my Columbia 8.7 for Hurricane Earl, I decided to take a couple of hours to take some measurements, and shovel out some trash, mostly delaminated plywood.About a 30 gallon trash bag full. Also managed to remove a short wall enclosing the head/shower. Earl, by the way, passed us by with no issues.

My pattern of sailing at the moment is chunks at a time. Will do a few day-sails next week then a long weekend to Dingle/Valentia Island. In September I hope to make it to West Cork and my trip Greek trip from Athens through the Corinth Canal up to Corfu is in October. Would love to sail in Chesapeake Bay sometime but dont know when I will be in that area again. Hope to do a Round Ireland next year ..will aim for that and see what happens. How is life treating you? Doing much sailing? Noone is ever on seaknots anymore ..pity ...really enjoyed talking boats there.

hey Larry ... Yes Ireland is great for sailing especially the SW ...but its never t-shirt and shorts weather even on a fine day. I suppose every sailor thinks their own area is the best. Best wishes

Lucky you sailing yesterday!!! Yep, is getting close, may splash next week if we get a couple warmer days for bottom painting and waxing. I should go down today if not freezing out and start polishing s/s.

DOLPHN 40 AMP BATTERY CHARGER

Hello all.The Dolphin 40amp battery charger in my 2011 43 is charging well, EXCEPT the cooling fan is cycling on and off every 20 seconds or so. Volts and amps are correct  although there is red light top and centre flashing red, does not look happy. It seems as if the thermostat controlling the fan is not functioning correctly as the unit is not even warm.I cannot locate the Beneteau supplied manual, any clues as to the fault.Regards,Bilgolabands (Liberte)See More
