SeaKnots

hi all,
I have had an unfortunate encounter with an old seadog.
I think he crossed the line when he unhooked my sailboat from a mooring bouy, telling me to shove off. I could feel the bad karma steaming from his old sailor mouth.

My "Q" to all you seaman out there is, Is there a written code of ethics that we as sailors follow? Besides common scence and good karma feelings.
Is there a civilian version?

Hi
Picking up someone elses mooring is a no no . I would have asked you to leave, but if he was coming in to pick up his mooring I can see where he would be upset. It's like coming home & finding someone in your bed.
hey there,
I think you may have misunderstood.
The moorings are rarely used and I was there for but an hour using it only temporarily while checking out an abandoned mooring ball. He was only out there in his dinghy coming from shore to be rude to me. Abit possesive of an unused mooring bouy I thought.
Too little information to respond to this specific incident. By and large though, you should not hook on to a private mooring without prior permission.
Yes,You don't board a boat without permission and you never touch a line without having been asked first.
Although you don't supply many details, the guy took the time and effort to row out to your boat, give you hell, cut you loose, then row back?

Holy smokes! That's the craziest thing I've ever heard! Although as mentioned, you should never tie to a private mooring, anyone touching my lines with the intention of set me adrift might find the remainder of my beer bouncing off his forehead.
There are several issues here. First, if you are a vessel in distress you have every right to tie up to the mooring. Then there is simple etiquete, if you were wrong in tieing up to a mooring, and the old salt was upset he should have informed you to cast off. It is never acceptable to cast off someone else's boat without authorization.
Thank you sir for this comment.
I was somewhat in distress as my mooring chain sank, and had no intention of staying there.
I think it was more personal, and the old salt over reacted to the situation.
No worries I am 50m away from where I was and all is good.
Cheers,
Charlie
