Hey....Is anyone from the O'Day group still active on this site. Looks like it died back in 2011????

I'm not saying that the deck is bad, it's just that sqeezing silicone rubber rubber around deck fittings looks bad and often times doesn't stop the leaks your attempting to stop.  Removing, cleaning and re-bedding the fittings looks better and seals better.  I would use LifeCaulk.  It's easier to work with and cleans up easier.  Avoid 5200 because it could make the fitting impossible to remove without damaging the deck.  Another place to check for leaks are the thru-hull fittings near the water line.  When your sailing and bobbing around water could be coming from there, and it would be intermittent: just a thought.

We have a '78 22' with shoal keel.  So it sounds like the deck to you as well.  I guess I'll have to try to find someone that can go below with a wrench, while I unscrew things from above.

Thank you.

Jim:

What model O'Day do you have?  It will be more work, but I advise removing the "deck hardware", cleaning the base and the deck, recaulk and rebed the hardware.

Oday Owners Help- While sailing I have been having some water end up on the cabin sole.  I open the inspection opening to the bilge and it has minimal water.  What would cause water to come in while sailing and high enough to only make it to the cabin sole?  I have traveled around the outside of the boat to make sure the hull is good and see no problems.  Any drains going thru the hull are above the water line, and I keep searching, but don't find any way for water to enter.  My only thought is that water is infiltrating the cockpit locker top when it rains and laying in the rear of the bilge and when we get out on the water rocking over waves, that water comes forward from under the cockpit into the cabin.  This weekend we are going to tighten up all deck hardware and silicone around all of them.  Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

My rudder bushings on my 27 O Day are shot  They still work but are very loose and rattle.  I will get through this season but then should consider changeing them.

Where and how do I go about doing this?  Being a novice I don't know where to start.

Great to hear you found a home for your boat.  I use to have a friend who had a boat there, well Machelhe Island anyway.  That should be a little downstream from where your at. Lots of luck and have fun.  My boat dragged the mooring in the fall and crashed into a motor boat on a mooring.  It is in the shop getting those nasty scrapes and gouges fixed up and replacing the rub rail, that rubbed right off and didn't help with anything like what happened, so she will be back to looking good again.

Have fun and it sounds like you found a great deal for 100 a month on a dock in a marina.  Great job!

Take care and if you travel up here to the NY/NJ area, drop us a note.

By the way, I found a really nice friendly little marina in Elizabeth City NC.  Lamb's Marina.  I can't say enough about it.  Under 100.00 per month for my little boat.

Good to meet you Jim.  Looking forward to meeting you in person.  I will make every effort to make the "ron-de-vous" this year.

Al
