You need to be more specific with you sailing plans. Do you plan on day and/or short multiday trips around southern California? If so a nice big roomy production boat would make a good choice. Do you plan on sailing offshore? Then a heavier bluewater boat may be called for. What does your budget look like? A lot of times that is the limiting factor. How big is your crew, singlehanding and family of 4 or more?

The only thing I can say as to west coast in particular is “Plan on a lot of days with light wind”

I suppose this is a good place to ask. Im curious to know the best choice of boat (all dynamics considered) for cruising most-all waters. Realizing there are optimal designs specific for each coast, what is the choice of many? Is it best to decide on where I want to sail, stick with cruising that coast for a duration then sell, get yacht designed for another coast and etc. This decission is an obstacle to me.

"Auto ascending setup is an interesting idea, though it takes a bit of fiddling around to get it right. Once it's dialed in, it actually works quite well."

"Michael, From experience over three keel boats a fully battened main is almost a requirement. Not only will it make dropping the sail into the boom bag far easier it certainly reduces any flogging and vastly lengthens the life of the sail. While…"
