sail in the ocean with friends and see how their boats handle---figger ou thow you like your boat to handle--there are advantages and disadvantages to all boats--is what can you live and work with without hating your own sailboat----how much are you able to handle? do you like fast and lots of work or do you like slow and steady and comfortable......look at plans of designers and learn what you like most in the interior layout and what is able to be compromised away for some other feature more important to you......do you feel more comfortable in smaller boats or larger boats ......how dep isw the water in general in the areas you wish to sail.......many many things to consider---where do you ultimately wish to be----what kind of water is there??
how will th eboat you want react to the environment--will it be steady or leap out of water like a porpoise......jus tsmall considerations in th eoverall scheme of comfort in boats--i personally prefer the tank with a lot oif storage for everything i need--and shelves and cabinets and lots of privacy should i wish to have company during passages...i like stability in an anchorage--i donot enjoy marina life at all...i abstain from marinas....i like m y anchor rode to be 100percent chain.......i would prefer to have waterline snubbing as a feature ....i prefer clipper bow designs which include garden and csy and yorktown and more very expensive cabo rico and gozzard designs.....full keel with protected rudder and propeller and a decently sized diesel for small spaces--full keel need the goose to maneuver in small spaces.....i like the tallship look in my smallship.......but others enjoy the speed fo the modified fin keel with skeg or spade rudder. i donot like spade ruddeer for blue water---they fall off,and rather easily , under duress.....snap the rudder post and you have no more rudder.
everyine is different and there are still enough boats out there to fit each individual personality of sailor........sail with others and research until you find the boat you most like then save a lot of loot and get the boat you are most happy with and will fit you best...

If you are interested in casting off the lines and crusing, a good place to start is Nigel Calder's book "Cruising Handbook". It is loaded with great information. He starts out with boat construction and ratios then moves into all of the major systems. Some of it may seem like "to much information", but when you go to buy a boat which you will be trusting your life with, its invaluable information.

Thanks Mike, That's what I need to know to gets me thinking. I have no plans, no budget nor crew to swear at at this moment. I am merely in those preliminary stages, between wishful thinking and damn certain I will be a cruiser, oneday! Being here part of this site is my first opportunity to beat the bushes and start to get a feel of what is essential in a cruiser. Moreover, as you've pointed out, how to be specific. These are the things I am asking to know of regarding purchasing a cruiser.
I'll thank everyone at this moment for any pointers as well as reprimandings (floggings are encouraged) regarding my desire to become a full-grown swashbuckler, or modern day cruiser, if ye will.
