Humm, I see the "thread" is about heat, and know that I finally moved my butt to sunny SW Florida for that reason. The only frustration here is LOW water!!

Howwever, I did live aboard year round for about 8 years n Boston Harbor, and even published a few articles on Shrinkwrapping boats in LIVINGABOARD I have a deisel powered ESPAR and it is simple. Just set the thermostat and it will keep you toasty especially if the boat is shrinkwrapped. The main proble is keeping fuel in the tanks and walking the docks!!!

Anyway, best of luck to all opf you!!

I've heard of using vaseline to avoid fungal growth but haven't ever tried it. As you say, the prospect of it squishing around isn't very appealing.

I have several pairs of "Wild Thangs" fleece socks that have been very good. You can get them at Sahalie. I wear them as slippers around the boat, and with sailing boots into the teens. They work well enough that my whining is usually about cold nose, ears, or fingers and I don't much notice my feet. *grin*

So is it true I hear of packing your shoes with vaseline to keep 'em warm? Cant imagine petroleum jelly squishin out all over the deck. Say it isnt so.

Cruise East Coast Fl ICW?
Am presently in St Augustine and plan a leisurely motorsail down the ICW (mostly) to Ft Lauderdale or Miami in about a week. Like to spend 2 to 3 weeks exploring on a new Leopard 40 cat?
Not looking for a relationship.

My boat has an actual for-real engine room, but I still have to fold myself into it to work on systems, thus the Vitamin 'I'. *grin* Some kind of heat is necessary to liveaboard in colder climates, and something that doesn't eat kilowatts lets you sail in cold weather.

I really like sailing.

here in dago, my formosa has a dickenson diesel cabin heater , not installed---no need for a real heater here--and my ericson has a force 10 propane cabin heater--also not installed--in case someone wishes to sail her to sacto delta area--is cold there....in dago it only gets cold enough for arthritic old pharts to gripe and use ibuprofin .....

LOL - I have a forced-air diesel heater from a company named Webasto; there are similar units from Espar and Hurricane. It burns diesel fuel from my main tanks and blows warm air throughout the boat, just like a furnace in a house -- at least it does when it works. It is truly wonderful in operation and doesn't use too much electrical power but I have been struggling with maintenance issues with mine. While I work on it I'm using a plug-in oil radiator and my heat pumps to keep the boat warm. That means if I go sailing I have to run the generator to heat the boat which I would prefer not to do.

Simple eh? *grin*

Not sure about Motrin - a bit of generic Ibuprofin after a day in the engine room working on the darn thing.

The problem with Florida is that it never gets cold enough to kill all the bugs.

Still struggling with my Webasto though - okay at the dock but it's keeping me from going sailing!

I'm thinking of flying down to FL in the next few weeks for a few days. There's a boat in St. Pete that looks interesting. Not that I can afford it, but hey - we can look can't we?
