Southeast winds 10 to 15 knots. Seas 2 to 4 feet. Intracoastal waters a moderate chop. Isolated showers and thunderstorms.
I met a fellow today who told me that Tropical Storm Fay is behaving just like a woman – she just won’t leave us alone.
Then I got an email from a dear friend today who wrote, “The world assumes you made it home safely…..”
I’m…

Fay has slammed O town today....but not as bad as yesterday. Still a lot of rain and gusts of wind.
She is leaving this evening or so we hear.....I also heard the stats this morning that Fay has dumped more rain on us than Charlie, Jeanine AND Frances. Now, THAT is a lot of water.
Couldn't get to Endless Wind today, but am going out in the morning to see my baby. I know that everyone found every leak their boat had during this storm....I guess that is a blessing in…

Orlando is now being hammered by Fay, but not as badly as Cocoa Beach on the east side. Weather says Fay may be coming back through again (hey, everyone who visits Orlando comes BACK!!) so we can expect more rain. And it has rained all day today....with gusty winds that are downright scary....everyone is staying home and hunkering down....
Fay is reminiscent of Jeanine, who came through after Charlie and hung around for a while....dumping rain on us maximally...and now Fay is doing…

Based in Orlando as I am, Fay has impacted us by her rain. We need it, so it's a blessing.
Our boat, Endless Wind, is slipped in Merritt Island. Fay has stalled over in that area and my poor baby boat is getting SLAMMED. I tied everything down really well before I left her on Sunday, but I worry, of course.
Who doesn't?
I do know that if something catastrophic would happen the dockmaster would call, and he hasn't. So, while it's raining a lot, EW is ok and still…

I know, I know, you read this headline and you immediately think about masked robbers on an open boat with machine guns causing trouble by the Statue Liberty. Well, not so fast, my Captain! The pirate we encountered in the NY Harbor may not fit that description but if it wasn't for some quick and clever detective work it could have cost us hundreds of dollars anyway. Here's the story:
A few weeks ago we were due for maintenance on our engine and since it's still under warranty we…

Today was an unexpected surprise. Franc and I had met our friends John and Emily on s/v Jezebel in Manhasset Bay for dinner last evening. It was so great to see them because they were not able to make the Summer Equator dinner last weekend. As always, we had a lovely time. What was an unexpected bonus was to meet the guests that they were going to be sailing with for the next few days, Kim and Pierre from s/v Victoria. There were four crewmembers on the boat but we only…

Last weekend we finally went sailing again. Between our vacation in Turkey (a week and two weekends) and the weekend we spent doing chores we hadn't had a chance to get out on the water for almost a month!
This time, we sailed down to the Raritan Yacht Club where Thad and Kristi of City Bumpkin were hosting the Summer Equator. We had a fantastic sail with Dan and Patrice as crew. We had drinks at the yacht club bar overlooking the harbor with live jazz and great…

The folks at Voyagers Mail Forwarding Service (
http://www.vmfs.com) have an interesting service for cruisers we thought you should know about.
Just picture this:
"Sure, you can ask your sister take care of your mail for you. You arrive in Nassau, and since you are only planning to stay there for two days, you ask her to Fed Ex your 4 lbs. of mail (it adds…

During their brief sailing cruise in Turkey, SeaKnots founders Andrea and Franc met up with member Stephen Phillips. Stephen has been cruising on his catamaran Gone Troppo for years even after having been attacked by pirates; an encounter that was featured in Klaus Hympendahl's book "Pirates Aboard". When Andrea and Franc learned that Stephen had not yet had a chance to read his story in the book, they pulled it off their shelf and brought it…

Bimini
25º43.61'N:079º17.95'W
I’m sitting in the main salon of my boat docked at the Blue Water Marina in Bimini listening to the sound of lapping water, distant music and the thrumming of a boat’s generator one dock over. At least tonight, I’m still awake past nine. Last night I was dead to the world at this hour.
I made my first overnight passage alone and nothing went wrong and I wasn’t scared out of my wits. Partly…

The time has come to say good-bye to my summer sail through the Abacos. I have been down here at the southern end of the sea of Abaco going into Little Harbor and enjoying beers and the company at Pete’s Pub – and going out and anchoring off of Lynyard Cay and snorkeling and playing fetch with my dog Chip on the long empty sandy beaches. It has been a glorious…

This past weekend we did our first trip since the Maiden Voyage. With our official crew on board (Patrice and Dan) we left the Marina just after seven and thanks to the current and Can Drac's great "iron jib" we reached Throgs Neck in just over 90 minutes. After that it was all "smooth sailing" because we decided to stop the engine and set the sails. We slowly ghosted along until the entrance of Manhasset bay enjoying the sunset and the silence…

Hopetown Harbor

Scattered Clouds. Low: 80° F. Wind ESE 8 mph.
I’ve been sitting on a mooring in Hopetown Harbor, Elbow Cay for about five days watching all the boats come and go here in this very busy little harbor. There are ferryboats, fishing boats, dive boats, dinghies, charter boats, and cruisers. The harbor is so small and tight with moorings, they don’t allow anchoring. As soon as anyone gets…

Burial at sea
Chrisy and Barbie, two blonde sisters had promised their uncle, who had been a seafaring gentleman all his life, to bury him at sea when he died.
Of course, in due time, he did pass away and the two blondes kept their promise. They set off from Clearwater Beach with their uncle all stitched up in a burial bag and loaded onto their rowboat.
After a while Chrisy says, 'Do you think we're out far enough, Barbie?' Barbie slipped over the…

As we finally prepare for our first weekend in the Long Island Sound, it's good to reflect on all the fantastic daysails we've had in the harbor this month. We've had lots of friends and family join us for our usual visits to the Statue of Liberty and even the George Washington Bridge!…

There are people who have written to me and asked about the snorkeling and diving in the Abacos and they have tried to remind me that the beauty of this part of the world is all under water. They are right. I can’t argue that point. However, that isn’t why I am here.
I have to go to work every day. Okay, sure, I am in paradise if you are a sailor and a diver, but the fact is that I must finish this book. I know people who live in some…

We hosted cocktails on Can Drac on a Saturday evening and that evening is one that would not soon be forgotten. It made me think...Is there a formula for creating one of the most memorable marina nights? How does the weather, food, friends, drinks and entertainment come into play? Let’s see…
Great weather? We had planned to have a relaxing get together in the cockpit under the stars with our friends. It unexpectedly started to rain just before everyone started to arrive. We were…

Late on the 31st of May, hours before the first day of the 2008 hurricane season, the first tropical storm of the season was named: Arthur. I was at Manjack Cay anchored just off this lovely little island sloop. I had gone over there for the evening to celebrate getting off the Roberts Marine dock and finishing my business with George. When I heard the news about Arthur on Saturday morning, I got to thinking about names.
Why do…
