Beverages on a Boat..

In continuation of my alliterative titles....OH YEAH!!!

 

So, what's your favorite beverage (other than water) to take on cruise?  Obviously, one has to take water. Beer takes up a lot of room, and to keep it cold, one has to take a lot of ice.  Even with the good maxi coolers and using blocks of ice to cool down the cooler, 3 to 4 days is about the limit.  Of course, drinking should only be done when anchored and by responsible adults.  ***painfully obvious disclaimer***

 

Hot drinks like cocoa or apple cider, I have found, are good.  The apple cider brands that come in the individual serving packages are quite excellent; spiking with alcohol is excellent (my input).  .I just recently found a homemade cocoa recipe mix. 

 

I recently downloaded a free ebook about dehydrating foods for backpacking or camping from Amazon for my ever ready kindle.  It includes the above mentioned cocoa recipe.  Also included is a way to make coffee from instant that makes it taste like fresh brewed. 

 

I have found that true sailors "don't need no stinking ice".  Mix that rum and coke right up without ice.  Take a shot of bourbon.  Ice is a luxury, and is generally reated as such.  When using hard liquors, the space taken is SO small compared to beer.

 

I have a VIP coming to stay on the Owl the first part of July (another blog post, for sure).  I need to figure out how to store wine the best way possible.  Does anyone have any experience?

More excellent ideas.  I will look for the type of glass you discribe.

I have tried the box wines.  They are good, so I will probably pack some of those too.  Yes, rum...way less space and it can be mixed with a lot of things....and storage for the bottles should not be a problem.

My wife and most of our friends drink box wine.  When we leave for the Bahamas its a six month trip so we carry at least 100 litres of box wine.  If you remove the bags from the boxes you can store them in those odd shaped nooks and crannies.  My wife uses a magic marker to note whats in each bag.  The bags are tougher than you'd expect and in the past 7 years we've only had one bag fail.  And that was my fault as I caught it on the cabinets latch while removing the bag.

I drink rum and whatever as a mixer.  I prefer green tea.  We take a bunch of the powdered ice tea mix or Crystal Light and use that.  Most of the rum bottles are plastic "handles" but we do carry 2 or 3 special rums in glass.   I used to drink beer but it just takes up too much room in the boat.  We have 2 very long bookshelves built into our cabin.  I store the rum bottles behind the books along both sides of the boat.

We used to have double rows of books but found that the books up against the hull were suseptable to mold. Now with the rum bottles lined up back there the air flows around everything and no more mold.

Plastic wine glasses have come along way.  They're pretty common and I find that most boaters use them.  My wife has a set of heavy plastic, stemless glasses that are so popular in glass nowadays.  Whenever we have landlubbers for company they're usually unaware that they've been drinking from plastic and are pretty surprised when they do find out.

Great idea!!  Thanks so much.  I, too, hate drinking wine from plastic (well, no glasses at all required if one drinks from the actual bottle...hahahaha).  I have MASSIVE space behind my setees (I am doing major spring cleaning as we speak for the illustrious VIP visit!).  This should work very well.  I can pick up some wine glasses at the dollar store.

I found a really excellent red wine available at Aldi's for 3.00 a bottle that is really excellent.  Things looking up!

When we were cruising full time, we are now only short term cruising, we always stored wine behind the settees, (sp), in old socks, white for white, black for red.  I also hate plastic wine glasses so stored glass ones the same way.  We never broke a glass or a bottle of wine.  Fair winds.
