Mark,

Your rumor be bilge water. Medical supplies were always scarce and it was rare for a pirate ship to come across a Dr. to press gang into crew. If you've ever seen the ending of POTC- Dead Man's chest as the splinters of wood were exploding aboard ship, imagine the wounds anyone in the area would face. Many pirates had eye injuries that led to infection and were removed. Glass eyes were also rare so the patch was the simple fix for what lurked beneath.

Ahoy thar me hearties! This wench always heard the eye patch was worn for better vision down below where it's very dark. After me pirate would swing ship over to shiver the timbers of another..the battle would sometimes go below decks and it takes a while for night vision to come back so he'd be well prepared to commence with the fight.

Ahoy! Can any of ye scurvy tadpoles verify a rumor fer me? Scuttlebutt says the tar with the eyepatch aboard ship was probably the navigator. He be wearin' the black patch as protection because he needed his peepers to "shoot the sun" when taking fixes with a sextant.

Word on the docks says he be travelin' with burly deck apes as bodyguards when ashore bein' he's considered to be the most important member of a crew. I be hearin' that a good navigator was bait for kidnappers and sometimes forced to work fer other ships.

So, what say ye? Be this true, or bilge water?
