FESTIVAL DE CANNES 2009: Cabins on the SAMARKAND

This year I arrived in Lagos Portugal from my trip over the atlantic. We started at the Bermudas. I did it with a great ship from Abeking & Rasmussen. It is a great 50 year old boat, that was build and owned by former IBM-owner Tom Watson Junior. It was designed by the sailing ledgend Olin Stephans and was build without a financial limit. It was sailed by Bobby und J.F. Kennedy and also Marylin Monroe und Grace Kelly were guest on the ship. It is runing 10 to 12 knotes with slow wind and… Continue

BVI trip starting in a couple of weeks!

As I said before, we (4 couples) are bare-boating a 45' cat for 9 days in January. We are looking for additional suggestions for great anchorages, great food, nightlife, caution spots, etc. We have received several ideas, and as it gets closer to the trip, I am asking for any additional suggestions that we should see.

Anything current that we should know would be greatly appreciated as well!

We love to party, and we also enjoy basking in the sun at beautiful… Continue

How do old glassfibre boats age?

My name is Peter. Retired.

I want to buy an older (25-30 Years) glassfibre sailboat and after two to three years of use sell it, with the feeling I im not fooling the buyer.

Theoretically, when plastic ages, it should loose elasticity. On the long term it would shrink and develop cracks, become brittle, while the glassfibre may hold everything in place or break.

Has anybody experienced if this can be felt? Maybe heard, perhaps with groans or squeaking… Continue

December 4

December 4, 2008

Three days ago, we stepped off the plane in Antigua and the tropics hit us in the face. The smells of the Caribbean arrived on warm, tropical breezes. Al’s bags didn’t arrive! Claudia and I carried our baggage on, so that wasn’t a problem for us. Al’s insulin was in his bag so he had to watch his sugar intake. By the time we got to the marina, the tiki bar was open. Al got a wrm reception from the b ar’s owner, Alicia, who said she owed him some money so we had a rum, two… Continue

Change of Seasons

Now that I live in the south, you would think that the weather is sunny, warm, and beautiful all year round. Well, as I've come to find out, that isn't necessarily true. The mercury has been fluctuating almost as wildly as the market lately. It's hard to believe it's December. The prevailing winds are a little more stiff and they appear to push water from Galveston bay leaving skinny water just about skim. The sailing will not be quite as regular as during the summer season, but at least it… Continue

Seeping leak near prop shaft

I have a seeping type leak near where the shaft exits my B43 behind the engine. The leak is not coming from the volvo seal, it puddles underneath the shaft and fills this area with saltwater after about two days. I have read a few posts on other sites about water leaking in from where the shaft exits the hull. Does anyone have any info on this. Going to call Beneteau tomorrow. Thanks DaveSee More

"As Chris mentioned there's a rebuild kit available for the pump. The kit has a new pump bellows as well as a check valve. Both should resolve your back flow issue. I agree it seems rather odd that someone wired the toilet pump to the engine…"

Questions From a new B40 Owner

Hi All - I'm the proud new owner of an '11 B40.  2 cabin model with 54hp yanmar, furling main.  Have had the boat for a few weeks now and about 120 miles of sailing (and motoring).  Love it, but I have a few questions about wiring, rig tuning, plumbing, etc. and I'm hoping to find one or some of you to help.1.  The shower sump pump will run once the water level activates the float switch, pump the sump dry (kind of a pulsing suction, not smooth like the bilge pump), then enough water will flow…See More

teleflex engine control problems

I am having problems with my Teleflex engine control. It works fine controlling the throttle, mooves smoothly.  But when the tranny is engaged the lever is very hard to move past 10:00 inf orwrd, or 2:00 in reverse.  Once it passes that point it moves smoothly.   And going from forwrd to reverse is especially difficult.  I have a 2012 B40 with a Yanmar 53hp diesel.Any ideas?See More

Rudder post support

While surfing the net, came across a B 485 that sank with a supposed rudder issue.  Forum member NeilPride posted a picture of a bracket to support B40 and B43 rudder posts.  First I had heard of this.  Has anyone had this added to there boat?http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f47/oceanis-485-steering-failure-160096.htmlSee More
