I have recently converted my 2008 B43 from a roller furling to a classic main. Can someone tell me the correct routing of the reefing lines for the two reef points. My manual does not give any information on this.

Thanks,

Dave

It all depends if you want the single line redefine that comes with standard Beneteau set up or separate reeling control for leech and luff. I had standard set up, which is round boom, up to reneging cringle, through block on outer end of boom to block on inner end of boom, up to luff cringle, flown through lead eye on mast to turning block at mast foot, through deck block to jammer on starboard side of companion way.

I dumped this after first season as there was no way that the sail shape could be controlled in any reasonable way. I have put two extra blocks in forward end of boom and additional jammers in cockpit. I now have luff control line from front of boom, up to luff cringle/block down through new block front of boom, to turning block at mast foot, though deck blocks to jammer in cockpit. The leech -- from boom to block on leech, through block outer end of boom, over block at front of boom, to turning block at mast foot, through deck blocks to jammer in cockpit. Now you can easily balance luff and leech tension accurately. I have also lead the topping lift aft into the cockpit so that all controls are at hand. I sail single handed sometimes so it helps not to leave cockpit. I have used existing lines for the leech reef and matched the colours but single colour lines for the coinciding luff line. I have main and topping lift to port along with clew/out haul and vang. To port I have the four reeling lines, genoa and spinnaker halyards on starboard.
I can now do partial reefs rather than hard down when conditions are in between first and second reef.
Hope this is helpfull.
Just looked at my reply auto correct has made nonsense of my reply. Sorry it was correct at time of pushing reply

Thanks, That is exactly what I thought. I am going to try two separate reefing lines, one for each reef point and see how that works. I do like the way you reconfigured yours but will try the standard for a few months and see how it goes.

Thanks Again

Dave,

I've dreamed of doing that for some time. How did you do the conversion? Did you have to replace the mast and boom? Or did you do some other retrofitting?  If the latter, I assume your ditched the fuler inside the mast?  So curious!  Details please!!!

I purchased a new mast through Beneteau, lucked out, they had one in stock. Otherwise you would need to purchase from US Spars. The boom does not need to be changed, just the boom end. All the rigging is interchangeable from one to the other. It was not a difficult job if you are half way handy. You will need to attach a couple mast steps so you can access the main halyard since it is a little high up. Otherwise I am very pleased with the performance of the boat now.

Were you able to get any trade in on your old mast from Beneteau?

No. They didn't want anything to do with it. I sold it on Craigslist.

Have just a good article on what type of rope to use in which situation. One reference was about single line reefing being ruined by having stretchy rope. If going for single line use spectra or dyneema. Low stretch strong rope. As it is so strong you can use much lighter cross section 10mm or less. If rigging now I'd have used it even on my two line system because it would be lighter up sail and wouldn't stretch at all. Have used it on genny and main and whilst about twice as expensive in UK once set up it really doesn't stretch as wind picks up.
