Gary; H W is owned by a very powerful Chinese businessman and last time I checked the government has first right of control over any chinese business. Doubt that has changed much, just less obvious. BTW, Bella, trucking company is US company so I would hope they know what they're doing and will have to prove it before touching my boat.

thankyou gary and bob--is a lot to consider when traversing one side to other---the idea of trucking across the peninsula is excellent alternative----let me know what you find out!!!!!

Bob, I had heard that China was loaning Panama the money for the new bigger canal, but I hadn't heard that they had bought the canal. However, with a bit of Googling, I found this article: http://conservativeusa.org/panama-washtimes.htm which asserts that Panama has assigned control over the canal to a Chinese company, which _could_ act against US interests. But OTOH, this article: http://www.pennwellblogs.com/mae/2008/03/chinese-company-doesnt-ope... apologises for making similar assertions. Hutchison-Whampoa, which is closely tied to the Chinese government, has the exclusive right to manage the port facilities at both ends, under a contract that was made under extremely dubious circumstances. The canal itself is still managed by the Panama Canal Authority. While the US has a treaty right to defend its access to the canal, asserting that right against H-W could potentially put us in direct conflict with the Chinese government. H-W has indeed been accused of treating Chinese ships with favor.

You laugh, I'm looking into being trucked across the narrow part of the Mexican pensula,. 120 mi. approx side to side. Hoping it is cheaper, know it is quicker. Big ports on both sides. Don't suspect launch/haul will be an issue.
