Something that appeals to me, is buddy boating. Though not a substitute for having full time crew (read mate), it does supply a few of the things missing in singlehanding, while still maintaining your independence.

There's someone nearby in an emergency. Someone to share time with ashore, or just a meal in the evening. And perhaps leads you to someplace you wouldn't choose on your own.

So while it's not a solution, so to speak, it can be an option.

concur with above....in entirety.....
Buddy boating seems ideal to me. Although not intentional that is exactly what I did during my first solo sail in the Abacos. Now, for this summer another gal and I are planning to buddy boat from Florida to New York Harbor. Although she is an experienced blue water cruiser, my novice experience is finding great comfort knowing she will be close by.

Nowadays people are spending boo-coup bucks to join pre-arranged buddy boat groups for trans-oceanic voyages. I prefer small groups, though! Sail safely,

the sassy one,
I would be happy to be a buddy boater, or be accompanied by a buddy boater. I think the companionship of a buddy boatist would be grand, wherever the distination, be it short and sweet or from here to there. I think I would welcome most sailors to catch a tow in my wake. Sometimes a site of someone off yer quarter can keep ye awake long enough to make the mark.
Well put!
Two years since your blog post, I am now taking action toward 'buddy boating.' My dream to do a solo circumnavigation has been tempered with the reality of the danger that lurks. Buddy boating has always appealed to me. My expected departure is June 3, 2012. Boat selection is my primary task. Finding a buddy boat or perhaps several depending on where and when I am around the world. Let me know if you still interested.
is anyone sailing south from sd this spring???? if so-- would you like to buddy to mazatlan???

It is the option I am looking for: buddy boating...............................................after my big lifetime dream of a cruise, then maybe I'll consider merging the buddy boats into one home upon the sea...............................Indeed, your post is a few years old, my first big in need of a buddy boat sail will be departing Florida, May 2012.....for NY Harbor, with a possible hop over to Bermuda on the return. Then, Dec. 2012 is off through the Panama Canal to explore the great Pacific Ocean and on and on all the way around.
