Just found out i'll be in Antigua for ANTIGUA SAILING WEEK - April 29-May 4. Anyone else going? I'll be covering the event for Blue Water Sailing Mag and the Cruising Compass. Deborah, thanks for the great Gelato tip!

Thanks, Deborah. We just arrived in Antigua and we love the feel of it. Looking forward to going to the weekly Shirley Heights party on Sunday night!

Sadly, yes, you need to be careful in Antigua. I have spent alot of time there over the last 15 years, and have long time resident friends. The recent murder of the yacht captain is widely believed to be drug related, although that is no excuse. The other of the married couple in a hotel appears to be completely aberrant. It is nearly unheard of in Antigua.
I was last there less than a year ago, and still enjoy it. however, I do NOT attend the (Stanford) Antigua Sailing week any longer. It has been turned into a loud, rude, obnoxious, drinking party almost like the St. Maarten Heineken regatta. Plan your dates, you absolutely do not want to be in Falmouth Harbor for race week, unless you want to be up all night, have your dinghy borrowed, your boat mistaken for someone else's, etc. Otherwise, I think Falmouth Harbor is one of the best places. Antigua has wonderful history, Nelson's Dockyard is a great place to spend some time and you can enjoy yourself alot. The marine industry is thriving and lots of people are happy to help you, and not need a handout. Unlike St. thomas, there really is a local marine industry. And, the BEST Italian gelato at SeaBreeze cafe on the water at the Falmouth Marina, pastry and coffee and great place to meet locals and visiting boaters/yachtsmen whatever. Like any place, stay away from drug deals and conduct yourself in a reasonable manner and you should have no trouble. Lock your dinghy at the dock like you would lock your car in a parking lot at a mall in america.

Any one been to Antigua this year? Should we be worried about security there, in light of the recent incidents?

We just saw the Maltese Falcon under full sail off of Virgin Gorda in the BVIs...what a sight! Looks like they are headed for the North Sound in Virgin Gorda, BVI.

A Club Member/Officer has a website of his Carribean Adventures. His site offers much insight of the area and could be helpful when planning your next trip to BVI

Hope to be in the area next winter.
