I don't own a boat yet, but one of my major concerns about owning one is getting hijacked or robbed or killed out at sea where I would be a long way from help. Is this something that rarely happens, or does everyone have to arm themselves?

Bill, you scare me. You're the reason I would want a gun on my boat.
Bill, I'm no expert, but I think you're the one with self-esteem issues.
Mom told me not to talk to crazy people. ROFL
There may be the outside chance that sailing the open ocean just isn't for you. Your fear of being attacked and murdered by armed thugs really is a bit over the top. There's a lot to worry about when cutting ties to a land based life. Your having "being hijacked, robbed or killed" as being a major concern is more than a little disturbing.

Thanks for the advice, old man. Go have your nap. Maybe you'll feel better in the morning. Too much beer gets an old man cranky.
Hey Bill, you're like an angry old man with too much time on his hands. Aren't there other people you could harrass? You're not really adding anything to this discussion.

Just because you're not paranoid doesn't mean people really aren't out to get you. (Sigmund Fraud)
