Grenada At Last

Well, we are in Grenada and have been here for a week. Yee Haw it is great to know that we don't have to go anywhere for a while. We had some great sailing days down the islands and saw a lot of places that we want to visit after hurricane season passes. Just heard on the cruisers net that the hurricane season has been downgraded again. Although we are now officially out of the box according to our insurance company, we still keep a close eye on the weather in case something develops. That's… Continue

Can anyone say "the best laid plans....?"

So, here I am ready, willing and able to get out on the Owl a week ago for her maiden voyage...but which didn't happen due to schedule conflicts and all sorts of hurdles in the way!

First of all, hubby's work put him on-call for a weekend (and this never happens). So sailing was out. Poor guy. He had to endure my conniption fit...and it was a DOOZY!!!

After that, we found out that our dear friends, Hans and Sue, sold their 27 foot sailboat, the Osprey.… Continue

Home Sweet Home

And so my journey ends with the voice of John Denver echoing in my mind his refrain, "Gee it's good to be back home." Never before have I felt so connected to my sister and brothers, my sailing friends and neighbors and my colleagues at work. By August 7th a colleague and I just challenged ourselves to present to each other our next 5 year plan. It's exciting to end one chapter in the book of life yet be passionately motivated to begin the next one. It was in a doctoral class that I learned the… Continue

July 21, 2009

Internet keeps kicking me off. Everytime I start to respond specifically to Jane, Scott, Lola, and Sonia I get a message that says I either opened or closed a new tab and walla kazaam suddenly everything goes away. So, I am ending this quickly and will then attempt a blog post. Lola, I appreciate your offer for assistance. Seems it was water in the fuel line which has been solved by adding, "water zorb" to each tankful. It only needs a capful or two but the problem has definitely, and… Continue

A fairly quiet season so far....

And so it goes. No real big tropical depressions out there yet. Note that operative word: yet. It is our traditionally hot and rainy season here in Touristland,. Rain during the rush hour on your way home from work. more often than not.

Taking out the Sea Owl this weekend for her maiden voyage. We are taking crew too...my son, Ben and his long time friend, JP. This should be VERY interesting and fun. The way the hubby and I figure it is that the more people on board the more… Continue

Memory Improvement

So I am sitting at the bar of the Anchor's Away Cafe in North Myrtle Beach; alone but content to just daze over my chicken quesadilla. The waitress offers me a Women's Day magazine politely saying, "Here, this will probably be better than listening to a all these men." Truthfully, I hadn't even noticed others were talking. Guess I'm tired from a long cruise. Anyway, according to some source you can improve your memory for things like where you left your keys if you wear your watch on the wrist… Continue

Texas Vacation

July came in quietly in the O town, just a lot of rain which is normal for us. Rain all summer helps us to be green and tropical at Christmas when Florida is the best place to be in the US. Just as it's the BEST SAILING STATE IN THE US!

Mostly the Tourist Town natives get out of town during this period of time. Helps us avoid the heat AND the tourists. Works for me!

Vacationing in land locked north Texas. Weather here is pretty doggone hot. And NO rain on their… Continue

Good judgement

This morning I was mad that I used good judgement and stayed on the ICW; but T-G I did not go outside. This afternoon I am having a pity party because the motor kept shutting off, the wind is howling at 25, I'm tied to a dock and not feeling very secure as the fenders keep popping off; I barely made it to this dock but it's on my lee side, so I'm having to sit with my feet pressing against the boat when the North Carolina power boaters seem to think going full throttle is some kind of fun.… Continue

Summer Time is Finally Here

Havent been on seaknots much lately, finally been warm enough to get outside and enjoy life. Been working mainly on the yard; planting, mulching, not to mention the weeding (the people who owned this house before me must not have weeded the planter areas in years), and working on the garden (have some nice tomatoes and peppers coming in). Will try to be on a bit more, but will most likely be on much more when it starts to get cooler out (which should be sooner than later since I live in… Continue

People, not places

We all know the cliche, it's not the place it is the people. So, it is that my plans to make Sandy Hook were changed when I learned (a) that my #1 sister, Jane and my #1 Sea Knots friend, Suki would meet me at Chesapeake City, (b) that my boss was able to hire my favorite couseling colleague to start the school year with me, and (c) that my husband really does worry about it. Blessing my decision to turn around after spending two days at the northern most part of the Chesapeake were the 3 days… Continue

Looking to Crew

I am currently taking my Day Skipper theory, soon to be followed by the practical element too. I don't have much practical experience with sail, as we always had power when I was growing up. I'm looking for the opportunity to join a crew near the Poole/Bournemouth area for evenings / weekend sailing, to gain some valuable experience and enjoy some water time!

If anyone has a boat, or knows anyone that is looking for additional crew, I'm 28, fit and healthy, jolly nice chap, and pick… Continue

Lexan windows

Hey,

We're in the process of changing the lexan windows on our boat. Probably doesn't warrant a blog, but I feel the need to vent, since, like every other chore on a boat, this one's taking five times longer and is way harder than planned. First we made templates out of bristol board, took them to the Plastic Shop, and they did a great job of cutting new ones. The old ones, which we also put in ourselves twelve years ago, have become too milky to see through. They were laid onto a… Continue

"Boatiest" Colleges in America

Hey Gang,

BoatU.S. did a round up of colleges that offer programs that can lead to a career on or around the water. It's unique as far as I know. If you've got high schoolers who are thinking about their future and whether or not boats should be a part of it, they should check it out. Here's the link.

Finally made it to Lower Alabama...and we want to do more of that and beyond!

Great trip. Especially for newbies. Looking forward to a more extensive trip. Might even start night sailing like Phil talks about.

Look on our blog for slideshow and the upcoming posts detailing the trip. Gina

Spring

June 5th 2009, Shilshole Bay:

The weather has been pretty nice the past week or so; almost like Hawaii in the dead of winter. But today we appear to be back to normal – cloudy, cool and wet. A good thing, I judge, as most of the locals have been complaining about the heat (Mid-80’s maximum) and attributing it to Global Warming, or as I prefer to call it – “Spring”.

Laura has been working far too many hours and attracting the wrong kind of attention from upper management – the kind of… Continue

Whew, and yea

Yea, I made it to St. Augustine on the ICW unscathed, relaxed and happy. There is internet at the St. Augustine Municipal Marina but I keep getting bumped off. Had a nice serendiptious experience when I picked up my friend Sandi (c-shore) at the Halifax Sailing Center in Daytona. So I'm going to be short with my writing. I will head for Jax in the morning and hope to cross in to Georgia in a few days. Me and my dog,,,,,,My friend Sandi (c-shore) heads home tomorrow morning. It was nice having… Continue

The SEASON arrives!

One of the ways you know that the season has "arrived" in the O Town is that the weathermen sign off on the local radio stations with a status report as to whether there are any tropical storms around. Goody! It's been pretty calm out there according to their predictions.

Weather now is rain most days during rush hour. We are getting our lush green look back after our first quarter burning drought. And of course, we are still under water restrictions [which will last probably… Continue

Second set of lessons on the way

Well, I just signed up for the next set of classes, ASA 105, 106. These deal with advanced coastal navagation and we will make a passage from Ft. Lauderdale, FL to Bimini in the Bahamas. I will be doing these classes by myself, as my Dad said he has learned enough and I can show him anything else he needs to learn. I will admit, 4 courses with 4 exams in 5 days was almost too much. He has had enough of classes and I am very proud of him. He did not get sick and he studied like a trooper.… Continue

A tropical WHAT?

Good grief!

It isn't even THE SEASON yet and there's a depression out there. Near North Carolina and not supposed to hit land, but it's already all over the radio. . Here, let me get out my 8 ball to confirm their prediction(s)!

The weather is humid and overcast. Looking at some major storms this evening in the city proper. It's on the radar, so I guess I don't have to consult my 8 ball.

No sailing this weekend as the hubby is sick and the weather looks… Continue
