Enough is Enough

According to Dr. Vincent Ryan, a secret to life is knowing when Enough is Enough. Put to song, Barbara Streisand sings a bittersweet rendition of 'Have I Stayed to Long at the Fair?' And, so it is as I begin provisioning Spray for the next leg of her Sailing at Sixty adventure. Not as giddy and naive as when I left Palm Bay, Florida nearly one year ago, the fear of being alone has grown. I believe it was Tania Abei who reflected on her round the world adventure. The hardest part she said was… Continue

Holy Moly

Recovering from the shock of reality I am marinating in grief over my husband's death. About this time last year, I became enchanted with the prospect of having a mate. He is tall, with a thick head of hair. His smile is infectious and he told me what I wanted to hear. Oh, "how he wanted to learn to dance" he exclaimed as he put his arms around my waist as we sashayed across my kitchen floor. He has no children and was only married once some 20 years ago. His custom built sailboat is the type I… Continue

Setting sail

Crew considered for sailing from south Florida through Panama Canal with stops along the way. Leaving December 2013 or January 2014. Boat is a Marples 35 tri with inboard diesel. My dream to sail solo has quelled a bit as I realize the value of comparable crew. Want to go? Let me know.

It is a small space

It is a small space, but I never thought of it that way.  Paneled in rich dark honey colored teak the interior of my sailboat seems soothing to me.  The largest “room” on the boat is the solon and it’s about eleven feet wide by eleven feet long.  Of course within the solon are the settees which borders the port side of the solon area from beneath the companion way ladder thwart ship to the port side of the area then forward to the bulkhead and where it makes a right angled turn to extend all…

Back online after a LONG time with an interesting bogus link!

I haven't had a computer for about 3 months so I haven't been able to blog.  And then there was that pesky writer's block I have suffered from for the past year.  Back in the saddle again with a refurbished Dell laptop that I am finding AWESOME for the money.

I continue in my attempts to single-hand the Owl.  I am still practicing manuvering into my slip at the end of an afternoon sail, but I just need more confidence through practice.  Still earning my Captain's hat, but…

oil slicks and things that go stink in the night....

there i sa bit of my engine that has been missing for over 2000 miles--and i donot remember ever seeing it in place.  isnt something one would look for--is the  plug or cap to the  hole which is used to  adjust the engine.  could be for timing adjustments--i never had to have timing adjusted so i didnt think about the problem being something so simple.

this is a small  plug or cap that covers a   little adjustment port on the…

battered but still in the game

Before heading off to work on Friday I packed my stuff for a weekend on the boat and stowed it in the car; gym bag, toiletries and laptop.  At 5:30 I check out of the office and headed east towards New Bern, stopping briefly to fuel up at Sam’s Club.  Arriving at the dock it was still light out as I loaded my gear in a dock cart and proceeded to the boat.  Climbing aboard I settled in after a quick check of the bilges and other routine tasks such as opening the thru hull valves for the…

Getting a few more things done.

It has been more like Seattle than North Carolina for the past several weeks. Clouds masking the sun and the occasional rainy day might be well for the farmers but not for those of us who NEED some sunshine to feel normal. I am so tired of overcast that I’m beginning to think, “Forget waiting for retirement, I’m leaving for the tropics now!!” At any rate it was dark…

Bliss it is....

January 11, 2013 seems like eons ago. The frenetic pace that moved me from a comfortably numb existence to living the dream is overwhelming. Where have I been these past three months, where am I now, and where am I going are the questions I am learning to answer in the present tense. Following the philosophy of Eckhart Toll in his books about the "Power of Now" it is clear that doing so empowers one to enjoy the roses along life's twists and turns.

Weaving philosophy throughout my…

A sweet day with my daughter.

I awoke at 0600 and after making the needed head call I returned to my bunk to check out the weather on my Kindle, read the USA Today news, and listen to Pandora’s comedy channel for a bit. Tim, my friend from the marina, had invited me to ...join him to get breakfast so I got…

Getting things done

Kai, one of my daughter’s very good friends, and I drove down to the boat Sunday morning with plans to do some maintenance and boat chores.  Kai is interested in the boating life style and had asked several times to come along with me.  It was fun to have his company as he talked about his studies in college, his aspiration to become a video game developer, as well as some of his opinions about a plethora of topics.  It…

She was irreplaceable, we "world-wide" will never have such a stronger allied, so acquainted with politics on a world scale.  Blue collar raised, and she applied it towards her position, she did amazing things. She was not only part of history, she made history! No one will ever replace her, or her skill set.

West Coast visit

Yesterday was superlative in every way imaginable.  Driving into Crescent City from Smith River, Marina and I joined my brothers Steve and Michael, along with their spouses, Lori and Antoinette, for breakfast at the North Woods Inn.  The jokes, quips, and laughter made our table one seriously raucous focal point for bemused glances from the other patrons.  Even out server got caught up in our…
