Day Skipper Theory + VHF radio course

In order to make things sink in for the more longer term, I opted to do my Day Skipper Theory course over a stretch of 2 months (instead of the 5 day or 3 weekends courses available), being one night a week and one weekend at the end. This also falls in nicely with a full time job as you can manage the course content and class attendance without having to add unneccesary stress to an already full schedule.

I did my course through a sailing school, Elite Sailing, based in…

Chesapeake Bay Buddy Cruise September 21,2009

I'm going to attempt another planned cruise on the Chesapeake in September. Sheila (wife,Admiral) and I on our Columibia 8.7, and Martin Duffy on his CS27, possibly one other couple on their Hunter 46 (?). Any and all are welcome. No set agenda as yet, just attempting to sail as far north as possible in a couple of weeks. Our starting point will be Urbanna, Duffy will be Deltaville. Can anyone say "the best laid plans....?"

So, here I am ready, willing and able to get out on the Owl a week ago for her maiden voyage...but which didn't happen due to schedule conflicts and all sorts of hurdles in the way!

Sicily, the Aeolians and the search for family roots

It’s been two weeks for us on these beautiful islands in the South of Italy. Two weeks of flat seas, blurry horizons and the strongest heat we’ve experienced so far on this trip.

Ever since we arrived the passages have been short and we’ve had plenty of time to cool off by swimming and relaxing just like ever other European on vacation.…

Home Sweet Home

And so my journey ends with the voice of John Denver echoing in my mind his refrain, "Gee it's good to be back home." Never before have I felt so connected to my sister and brothers, my sailing friends and neighbors and my colleagues at work. By August 7th a colleague and I just challenged ourselves to present to each other our next 5 year plan. It's exciting to end one chapter in the book of life yet be passionately motivated to begin the next one. It was in a doctoral class that I learned the… Continue

"Hi All, french built 2010 43 has been very dry down below but now a slow leak has occurred which is showing at the limber holes under the floor board in forward cabin. Bilge pump goes every 3hrs for 20secs. Not sure if it’s fresh/rain water or…"
