We have one from our old boat that we used to get our dog on and off. It's sturdy enough to hold an adult as well. It's built out of pressure treated lumber, is 12" wide and apx 4' long. I cut a 2x6 in half and used 2x4's laterally on the under side in 3 places. One of which I placed with the short edge cut into the 2x6s so that it would provide an edge I could catch on the toe rail. I also took an old rug and cover the 2x4s on the bottom so they would not scratch the gel coat. I can take pictures of it if you'd like.
Mine is mounted on the lower part of the left backwall. It was the only place I found that I could reinforce from behinde. Next season I am going to ad a second mounting place on the Step
I have the fixation on rear stanchions. Like you I have not made the hole in the steps yet since I might use the storage under the steps for the gas bootles and get to use the port lazarette underneath.
