I'm curious about anyone's AIS experience, specifically with an ancient E Classic MFD.

I've been looking at AIS options but I don't want to do a MFD upgrade just yet.  I'd really like to get the Vesper Marine box with wifi and use my E80 and a tablet to display and track traffic.

Any thoughts or experience on if the E80 can satisfactorily display AIS targets, filter and CPA information?

Also any other AIS options or thoughts with a Classic E?

I have an E80 display with the AIS receiver added to the boats network. It seems to work correctly, although I turned the proximity alarm off due to the fact that we are very close to a set of locks and tow make up area.

I have a Raymarine AIS linked with my E80 down below & my E120 at the helm. The AIS works excellent, with no issues. Targets display in a number of ways, overlapping on the chart or the radar. Makes it very easy to see what is out there and also get the details on a particular target, length, speed, course, ect... Have to turn off alarms when entering a busy marina, drive you nuts.

Thanks William and Dave. What RM AIS unit are you guys using?

I looked at the RM site and their ASI350 (receiver) or the ASI 650 (transponder) don't show that they are compatible with the E Classic series.

I only have a receiver but am unsure of the model number at this time. I used a marine electronics company to purchase/install all of the additional electronics on the boat. That way if it did not work it was their problem not mine. However, I will see if I can locate the number here at home and let you know.

It is a Raymarine, receiver & transmitter. Not sure of the model, but most likely it is the 650

We have the ICOM MX5000 receive only tied into a E120. Installation was straight forward other than fishing the communication cable to the E120. It works well and I wouldn't be without it.

I just installed easyAIS in my Beneteau Oceanis 40 (2007) with Raymarine E80 plotter. The CPA is workig fine. The settings for this function can be adjusted in the plotter it self.

i have the E120 and use a Raymarine 650 AIS transponder. All works fine.

"Ancient E Classic" amazing, 6 year old technology is ancient, wow,!

We own a Raymarine E120W in our 2008 B43. E120W just retired by Raymarine after a 2-3 year operational run. Nothing wrong with the MFD, as a matter of fact we love the unit. Garmin and Furuno came out with bluetooth technology and E120W was doomed. Raymarine has rushed out the 3rd generation E mfd's to compete. I hope these new units prove to be as sturdy as the "ancient"  E120 classic.

Like Mike Brown, we have the Icomm mxv5000 AIS receiver on our boat. Easy to install and great presentation on our E120W. Our mfd has 3 nmea 0183 ports so it was easy to increase baud rate to 38400 to accommodate AIS speed.

I too have an "ancient" E120 wide and recently purchased a Raymarine 650 AIS.  How did you wire the power for the AIS?  Were you able to connect it to the "navigation" switch on the VDO?  If so, how did you do it?  Or did you simply wire in a separate switch?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks all. I'm happy with my E80 Classic and have no plans to replace it so I'm glade to hear that the E80 Classic version  can work with an AIS Transponder.

Maybe I'm confused about RM's product lineup. The "Classic" (RM's term not mine) is the E80/E120 product that first started showing up in 2005 and 2006. The "Wide" version showed up later, with 3 nmea 0183 higher baud rates.

Seems to me that in terms of electronic evolution,  2005 was a long time ago. Thinking when was the first iPhone?
