I am installing a NextGen 5.5kw generator in my 2011 B-40 - 2 cabin. I started installation and decided the best location is the cockpit locker approximately 12 inches from the forward bulkhead. To accommodate the height of the generator I will need to cur out a portion of the shelving in the locker.

Has anyone installed a generator in their B 40/43 and any time saving suggestions.

Thanks,

Bruce

I am attaching the spec sheet for the generator that I put in my Ben 40. It is very compact and specs say it weighs less than 300 lbs. with the sound shield. There are others that have installed the 5.5 in their starboard aft hatch as well. There is also a 3.5 kw version that will drive AC, but not necessarily all the electrical's on the boat side. If you use it allocating your resources, it might be suitable as well.

I added an opening hatch to the starboard locker to provide fresh air to the generator. I just need to remind myself to open it each time I turn on the gen set. I also sound proofed the starboard bulkhead and forward bulkhead of the cockpit locker as well as put the exhaust fan for the generator on rubber mounts to cut down vibration noise. We added added a set of motor mounts under the ones on the sound shield to further isolate vibration. They are rated at 75 lbs each. I will be adding chain to the chain locker. Currently the boat sits slightly aft down and bilge water does not easily drain to the bilge sump. There is no noticeable heel to starboard.

I added a 3.5 KW Next Gen to my B43-2 cabin.. I too placed in the port locker, running sideways near the front of the compartment under the shelf.I also added the Soft Start controller to the 16kBTU aircon to allow the 3.5 to start . It works fine,

I went with the 3.5 for lower weight, and lower fuel consumption. It is a bit noisy, a little less than the main propulsion engine.

Anne is correct. You made need to take apart some of the wider elements to place in the aft locker. There are some owners that went with the 3.5 KW and then manage their energy load to run only AC or House electricity or only one compressor at a time. I installed a 5.5 NextGen and placed it in the cockpit port locker, but I have a 2 cabin Ben 40.

The boat yard installed the generator on my 2008 40' and cut out the panel between the aft cabin and the locker also. They put simple barrel latches on both sides to keep panel in place. The cut is just below the cabin ceiling, allowing easy access to the side of the generator for service.

I am working with Beneteau to install a 5kw Onan in our Oceanis 43.  Below are photos of the proposed location in the port locker.  Does anyone have experience with this generator in a B40 or B43?  Fischer Panda has been suggested by an after market supplier.  Does anyone have a experience with an FP unit?

It looks like a neat installation. I would suggest that you sound insulate the entire compartment.

During my investigations before I installed my NextGen 5.5 generator, I read many reviews that panned the Panda and being overpriced and the supply of parts were not readily available.I would be hesitant in installing one.
