About Me:
I'm a marine biologist/physical oceanographer working with an international organization in Seychelles. Originally from Venezuela, but I have lived in several places for the past 25 years, and in Seychelles for the last 9 years.

Our boat is a kurt reinke 46’ steel cutter. We have been sailing it around Seychelles. The boat is now on the dry for long refit in preparation to go full time cruising with the family next year. We are approaching full-time cruising as an experiment so far. Let’s see how the kids (4 of them :-) adapt to it.
Current location:
victoria, seychelles

My adventures with Valentina's engine (Part I)

Posted on October 14, 2009 at 6:30pm 3 Comments

It's funny how life knocks you around, sometimes to unexpected situations and places. A month ago, I thought Valentina was ready to go back on the water after two and a half years of refitting. It’s not finished, but not having to pay the boatyard fees and been able to use the boat would have been great. I did my last checks on all the systems, and among other things, I let the engine run for a good one hour so. Everything seemed to work fine. The engine started easy (after two years without… Continue

Finally electricity is done...

Posted on April 29, 2009 at 2:33am 3 Comments

Finally, I'm finished redoing the electricity of the boat!!!. I just stripped the old mess, designed a new floating ground system and did all the wiring. Everything seems to be working fine, and not a single fuse/breaker went off. I'm actually impressed with myself. It did take me about a year to do the learning, the design and the work itself (working only one day a week).

One of my three Trojan J185H seem to have shorted one cell. Well, we'll have to live with only two (about 500… Continue

We were having a glass of wine last night and Penny was wondering about you guys are and where you are. We left Ca. last August to look at a boat, went back to Ca. and dumped everything, sold the motor home and moved to Fl. We boughy a 47 foot ketch and are currently redoing her hopefully ready for Nov  season. Hope to hear from you soon.

Give our love to Amy and the kids.

as it happens, the engine was overheating because of several air pockets on the hose between the solenoid and the heat exchanger. So after all, the engine is running great. Tomorrow trolling day for me, to test the engine for a whole day, and may be have some fun in the processs.... After two days of depression, and trying to cheer myself up from no having a working engine, I had a beutiful sunny day with an engine that is purring like a cat.I love my boat again...

Hi Terri, well that's life. At least I'm saving the money I would have to pay to the boatyard :-). It is hard to have enough patience to deal with these things, but then, I'm a very patient person. You have to when you have that many children :-).

Have a merry chritsmas too. We are moving to the boat just after chritsmas!

Hi DWS. Everything is alright on this side of the world. Good news is the boat is back on the water. The bad news is that the engine is overheatiing, so there's still more work ahead to find out the reason.... I suspect is a bad thermostat, since the engine was teste on the dry several times without problems. I'll post some pictures of the launching soon.
