SV Athena and, Peppermint Patty (my cat), and I are currently docked in Nokomis, FL, but moving to Punta Gorda, FL, in December. We'll be at Fishermen's Village on Charlotte Harbor. I hear it's a fun place to visit for cruisers ;)
My home port is Melbourne, Florida which is easily reached on the ICW. From the Atlantic you can enter Port Canaveral and be challenged by the cruise ships; albeit there is a lot of activity, restaurants and such along the channel. There are a set of locks to contend with before reaching the ICW (about 5 miles or so). Then head south.
From the Ft. Pierce inlet, which in nice weather is serene, head east to the ICW then go north. There is a narrow sprit as you wind through Vero Beach. Beautiful homes line the shore, but don't oogle too much or you will drift out of the winding, narrow channel. After passing under the Wabaso Bridge you'll have a beautiful sail north to Melbourne.
Either way, it's a nice sail and the Melbourne area has several sheltered areas to anchor.
Ahoy Wendy:
I kept my boat at Mimico Cruising Club, Toronto for over 20 yrs......have sailed into your club a few times with club cruises and we enjoyed the hospitality from RHYC very much. I now have my boat at Collins Bay Marina, Kingston and exploring the 1'000 Islands area. If you should sail down this way, I would be pleased to offer you a complimentary dock for one night here. Or, as a club member you can also receive reciprocal priviledges from the Collins Bay Yacht Club.
