Rebuilding a 1979 Columbia 8.3 sailboat

Group,

I was given a Columbia 8.3 earlier this month, and I want to keep a running commentary on the rebuilding process. I thought that here, in my blog would be a good place to do it.

August 7,2010

Just a quick note. Looked at and bought a running Atomic 4 today. May not need

it, but thought at the price, it would be foolish not to have it standing by

just in case.

Now to clean up the old… Continue

Yacht Master Theory

Well, it has been a LONG winter. With the exception of a lovely sailing holiday in the Grenadines in April 2010, I've not been out on the water all that much. Money seems to be going elsewhere at the moment. I did manage to book my Yacht Master Theory class through an acquintance from my yacht club.

It was to be held at the Barclays building in Canary Wharf (serious banker area). The course was hosted by The London Sailing School and also ran over 2 months of one night a week…

Grenada

We arrived in Grenada 2 weeks ago and have been busy tracking down and fixing our gremlins. To date we have ordered our new jib, and finally have the freezer working again. Nutmeg icecream all round! One of the first things we look for on arrival...Grenada is the only place you will find nutmeg icecream, fantastic! We are presently on the lookout for some engine parts, a never ending battle no matter what island you are on. Sad to say Grenada is following suit with many of the other islands…

The hull, OMG! THE HULL!

The day came when the Marina staff strapped her in and up she went, gracefully emerging from the water for the first time in at least 10 years.

We expected the 3 inches of sea life on the hull, so as they scraped the hull free of most of that we felt pretty good.about what we were seeing at that moment. Once the Sailboat was in the yard and began to dry a bit we were able to see more and more little blisters showing up, but they looked small so after a few weeks of drying out Captain John… Continue

DISCOVERY AND DEMOLITION

Entering the Westsail to evaluate the complete extent of her neglect and injuries was quite a frightening experience. I felt as if what I was surveying would never be able to be resurrected. But the optimistic "Captain John" was not deterred for long. After we found a place among the mess to sit down, he began thinking about what to do first.

The floors came out, doors off the cabinets, cushions out to clean, the ceiling cover ripped out, old stove gone, old sink gone,…

Jealousy - knowing how to rid it is easy . . .

Jealousy, that eenie, meanie, green monster that invades my soul at the sight of certain individuals, consumes way too much energy. As a practicing counselor for 30 years I know that jealousy is simply an emotional response to my own insecurity. It is my belief that I am not good enough coupled with the delusion that someone else is better than me. Simple solutions are to ignore those I am jealous of, reinforce my own knowledge and skill, or just hold my head up high and pretend to be…

A Summer Evening in Cap Sante

by the First Mate

Anacortes, Cap Sante Marina

We had originally planned to head from Friday Harbor directly to Port Townsend

but upon reaching Cattle Pass we once again found it enshrouded in fog

and decided to turn around and make for Anacortes instead.

We spent our afternoon wandering the shops and pubs and visited my favorite

store, Marine Supply and Hardware Company is said to be the oldest

searching for a motor and found .........something amazing!

The "Watkins 27" really needed a replacement inboard so as all good Sailors do, we search, talked to all our friends, all the Marina suppliers in the State of Florida it seemed and then a strange thing happened.

I was minding my own business coming home from a doctor appointment and some "smuck" rammed me in the back of my SUV sending me off the road and lucky I did not roll. I climbed out of the vehicle, checked the damage and realized the guy that hit me was in big big trouble with… Continue

Led's

I have just finished changing all my lighting over to LED's, it was definitely a trial and error effort but here are the advantages:

1. my Amp hours has been reduced (with all lights, cabin heads, galley nav, anchor light etc on) from 44 amp hours to 6

2. my average amp hours has been reduced from 18 to 2,5, (this would be at anchor with the salon lights on)

3. my anchor light uses 1.2 amp hours versus 8

4. my solar panel (a 75 watt 3,5 amp) takes will trickle…

In the beginning, you learn how too work the jib, right?

When Captain John and I began our sailing ambitions in 2005 we purchased a sweet 27 ft Watkins to hone our skills on the Indian and Banana Rivers around our area. It was a quaint boat with all the essentials and in decent shape so, after much studying, Capt. John and I embark on our first day trip out on the water. We managed fine getting out of the Marina, and motored out just far enough to get the sails up. Well, all went as planned and we proceeded to play with the sails and catch the wind a… Continue

Now that I have introduced myself, I will start telling of adventures at the dock and at Sea (LOL)

Now you have a feel of who I am as a person, The Captain is trying his best to make a good "First Mate" of me. As I write here, you will find his job is rather difficult and it produces some pretty interesting, and funny situations. I hope you enjoy as I write and I look forward to making some great friends here!

Smooth sailing and happy days!

Desiderata

Desiderata - by Max Ehrmann

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,

and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly;

and listen to others,

even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and… Continue
