I went with the shade that was on the boat,  Mine seems to match the Teak interior.

I see color ranges from Blond to Walnut.

I have seen some really beautiful finishings and shades.

The photo here shows how my stern rail was before I refinished it,

Brightwork color on THE PRIDE OF BALTIMORE

A Variety of different colors depending on the wood and the finish

WOW beautiful work. A variety of colors ...as a sampler.Beautiful boat.

How often do you refinish/? Do you do all areas at once?
Very beautiful boats that are professionally maintained.
As for the average boat owner, prep is the major work. You put on three to five coats the first time(even more with varnish). Once you have that done the most important thing to do is maintain it and put on a maintenance coat on every year, You go over it with a scotch bright pad, we use the purple one. touch up any wear spots. apply the maintaince coat on and all the finishes , ie varnish, cetol , bristol finish will last you a long time. You ideally want to have muliple coats on so you are really just renewing the top coat.
If you neglect it then you will just have to start all over from scratch, to get back to where you started.
