NEED A CHART PLOTTER GPS...ANY FOR SALE? I bought one 440 s...Garmin..may keep discussion open for others.

OK Folks,

I'm in the market for a used Chart Plotter GPS....Any for Sale?

West marine says they think the GPSMAP 440...US COASTAL MARINE CHARTS...MODEL 8731754...$599.99 IN THEIR CATALOGUE PAGE 48 AT the bottom....would serve me.

Advice please.

Suky,

The 540S I have now has a 5" screen. Looking at it, it seemed that I am restricted to very small area, when looking with enough detail. The level of detail can be changed. However if you are looking at a large area and the maximum detail, all the details are one on top of another.

Hand held will be similar or worse. But if you are chartering, then it is hard to go with any other type. I had a look at the specs for the Garmin 620 and 640, and conclude it would not be any improvement to the current 540.

What I am looking next is the 4210 or 4212. Price difference is not that much. May go for the 4212 (12" screen). These series has the advantage of being able to add radar to it. Since I don't sail in foggy area, I would select the older type radar than the new Broadband radar, which is good for close, but gets very poor for long range images. I plan to use the radar as a collision avoidance warning by activating the perimeter watch.

The good thing about the Garmins are the included maps. The maps alone can cost a bundle if you have to purchase for a large area.

Happy sailing,

h
I can put together a chartplotter computer that is military spec so it handles rain, dropping etc if you are still looking for one that is.
I have a new/open box Stardard Horizon chartplotter with internal GPS. $650.00 includes shipping. That's below wholesale!

Lola,
I had a 440 before I upgraded to the 545 and I loved it. Sold it to Martin Duffy to buy the 545. If you are still interested the price has come down at West Marine. Supplies are short though.

Larry thanks...I bought the 440 s as I mentioned b4, I wonder if I should close this discussion?
Ok folks
SeaClear II now reads .Kap files, and they are available for free download from Noaa, hook a Gps puck to your USB port on your computer then you have a GPS/Chartplotter with AIS, take the output to your TV and you can lie in bed watch a movie and have your charts display on the PIP, seriously though, the best deal on the market is SeaClear, I have been using it more then a year now and it is great as the NTM.s are automatically upgraded etc, there is a newsgroup on Yahoo dedicated to SeaClear.
