i bought waverv from downwind marine in san diego---is a functional free wifi getter.

I used WaveRV in Florida and the Abacos last year. It's made for marine use and worked right out of the box. I could usually find a free connection to get weather and E-mail. Connections were constantly being interrupted. Paid wi-fi was available in the keys and the tourist areas in Abacos-about $10/day. www.radiolabs.com. BTW, Practical Sailor is to test several in an upcoming issue.
Is WiFi the right solution for a boat? I question this as a moving boat owner, you are not in cotrol of the WiFi transmitter. So, no matter how good of a reception antenna you got, you at at the mercy of the WiFi signal sender.
If you are in USA and wanted weather, you can get one of those satellite weather gear and subscription.
If you are out of the USA, you can look into Pactor Modem and Sailmail.
