Profile Information

Profile Type:
Sailor
Homeport:
Norfolk, VA
About Me:
I'm a 20 year old sailor in the United States Navy, serving aboard DDG-74 USS MCFAUL in Norfolk, Virginia as a Missile Technician. I started sailing in my home state of Iowa on the Mississippi River when I was about 15 years old with my grandfather, Gary Johnson, aboard the Chocolate Chip. I've sailed with him countless times and he has instilled the seed of sailing within me. After joining the navy I was asked to go on a weekend race on Lake Michigan with a retired Comadore from the navy. I had a great time and had a new experience aboard sailing off of a river. I am currently joining the sailing center on the base in Norfolk and will be taking a class or two on sailing very soon. I plan to be out multiple times each week my ship is not underway. I am going to start with a Hunter 240 and work my way up to the center's Endevour 32.
Current location:
Norfolk, VA
Destinations visited:
Iowa - Montrose, Fort Madison, Keokuk
Illinois - Great Lakes, Lake Michigan, Few ports I can't remember the names of
Virginia - Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Portsmoth, Yorktown
Florida - Mayport
Looking to:
Become a better sailor and own my own reasonably sized sailboat in the next ten years.

Hi Laine, I am Jim Schleter and I guess we have something in common. I have also sailed on The Chocolate Chip with your Grandfather. He has more than likely told you of the time he sailed the Muriel Jo from Maryland back to Iowa. I was the second mate who helped him on that trip up to Ashtabulla, Ohio. I had to jump ship and go back to work then, but I was able to rejoin him in Chicago to St. Louis. Also, a long, long time ago I was in the Navy as a radar man on the USS Dash (MSO 428) out of Little Creek, Va. Just across the bay but that was back in the late 60's. The Dash was made of all wood it being a minesweeper. That was a great ride. Drafted 10 feet with a rounded bottom. Take care and thank you for being out there.
