Hi Peter,  I have owned and sailed "Zephyr" a Cal 29 Hull 34 since 1976.  The process I have used to tension the standing rigging follows the recommendations of Bill Lapworth in his rig tuning letter of 1970 or 1971.

Ensure that the mast is plumb to the boat and in collumn.  Take the boat out and sail it in ten to twelve knots of wind. Sail close hauled on both starbord and port tacks.  Adjust both the uppers and the lowers so that the mast remains in collumn while under moderate load.

This tuning method provides for a good performing rig while maintaining low static loads in the rig.  Head stay sag is adjusted by tensioning the backstay adjuster.

Zephyr has a split backstay witha double block arrangement that is used to reduce the distance between the backstays after the split.  This arrangement is simple and is quite effective in controling headstay sag.
