Profile Type:
Sailor
Homeport:
Plano, TX
About Me:
Raised in Miami, FL ,my father was with Braniff Airlines for 42 years. Flying was all I knew. Lived in Carson City, NV for 9 months and purchased my first 15' sailboat in 1974. Moved to northeastern OK and picked up an additonal flight rating: Airplane Single Engine Sea. Talk about "hooked", the best of both worlds. In 1976 purchased Port Cherokee Seaplane Base from the current owner that started the base in the 1940"s. In the same year purchased a 1969 Kenner Kittiwake #212. Sailing was all it could be. Flying for a living and sailing for fun. Time passed as did the Kittiwake, 3 daughters later and a divorce after 20 years . He got the seaplane base and I got the kids. Career change required on my part. Graduated with RN degree in 1996. Moved to Texas and married my best friend Brad in 2000 and in 2005 purchased yet another Kittiwake #145 and spent 2 years on a keel up restoration. But time has taken it's toll. Between years of jazz, tap, ballet and hundreds of sky dives, the knees are just too tired of the short headroom in the Kittiwake. In Sept of 2007 I purchased yet another Kenner, this time a 1967 Privateer Cutter rig #37. Since she is 41 years old, there was a bit of work to do. I just finsihed getting the standing rigging inplace last weekend. The little one-lung Volvo Penta had issues. There was water incursion around the mast step. But all is up and running well and soon we will leave the slip. She came with a car hauler and custom cradle. We have hopes of heading to the Gulf in 2009. Took Brad to Key Largo for a week of sailing around my old stompin grounds. He has taken to sailing like a duck to water. Pilots seem to migrate to sailing it seems.
I guess my interests are a bit broad with a range from scuba, sewing, flying, knitting, skydiving, stain glass work, reading Dirk Pitt novels, Cruising World and any books on cruising, flying to various destinations in my 1958 Cessna 172 or 1947 Cessna 120 that Brad's father purchased slightly used in 1949, spending as much time as I can on the boat or at the hangar when not working. I am gainfully employed as a RN and work for 2 surgeons. The 3 daughters all live in the Dallas area and the middle daughter is expecting her first child so I guess I will move into the Grandmummy role in a few months. Would love to hear from others that have a love of sailing as well as from those that are living aboard. Blue Skies and Wind at your Back
Current location:
Lake Ray Hubbard, Dallas , TX
Looking to:
Living aboard hopefully within the next 7 years when retirement arrives. My preferance is to build a hangar with an apartment in it on a small grass landing strip and live there during hurricane season and spend the rest of the time on the boat. But my younger MBA husband is just not ready with the "bear" market and he feels he has too many good working years left. Pffttt...I say "GO NOW"
