My 26 X Macgregor has water ballest, the centerboard is hollow fiberglass and is used to prevent Leeway while sailing, it lands on beaches very well and will stay upright because of the flat bottom. The water ballest is released while makeing headway at 8 mph and opening a valve, this is used while going 15 Knots and trailering to reduce weight .
It has a 50 hp Honda.
I belong to the West Coast Trailer Sailing and most of the sailboats can be beached.

I know the multi-hulls can beach themselves without any problems but I thought single hulled boats have steel keels that protrude below the main hull to act as counter weights for the sails. So you say that some of them are retractable? I guess thats only on the smaller sailboats?
The far two boats are Potter 19's with a Daggerboard allowing only a 9 inch draft, the others are Sea Pearls that have Leeboards that pull up to allow 6 inch draft.
My Current Macgregor 26 X has a centerboard that when pulled up draws 9 inches.
There are many diffrent sailboats made that allow for shallow draft by Daggerboard, CenterBoard,Leeboards and the Trimarans and Catamaran.
