A "slow" is a lobster that if observed for a short time, can be seen to be moving considerably slower than the rest. Lobsters when dying for whatever means, literally "slow" down. Dying lobsters release a toxin into their system which will make you severely ill for 4-5 days. Affects are similar to salmonella poisoning. This is why you toss them live into boiling water. Prevents the release of the toxin. Have first hand knowledge as was served a slow at Hampton Beach in my early teens. Couldn't look a lobster for years, over it now and will devour the spiny little buggers with great relish now.

PS Anyone considering catching lobster best get a gauge. The fines for keeping a small (undersize) lobster are steep and are multiplied by the number of small lobster. Also, females bearing eggs are a no-no.

Happy New Year! Anyone else leave their boat in the water this winter?
I'm going to be doing a series of articles on some projects inside the cabin of my O'Day so Guru's Method still has a wet bottom.

I call it a stroke of good luck to find someone willing to pay me to do a couple of projects on my own boat. I guess there are some advantages to being a freelance writer after all!

DEM
that is for RI, but other states have a lower fee.

Andrea;
As to you question about lobster pots, you need to be licensed. Licenses are being limited and I think you need to be a resident of the state in which you want to set your pots. There is legislation pending or recently approved in RI thats prevents the issue of new licenses at refuses renewal of licenses that are not being used. Go to the DEM web site for accurate details of licensing requirements for each state and where and when you can set pots. Then get yourself a license, couple of pots, bait them, set them, wait and check them periodically. BTW, NEVER EAT A SLOW, you will get incredibly ill.

Hi Andrea,
I just joined NES and sail out of Greenport. I used to have a lobster pot outside of Huntington Harbor. If you still need info. on the particulars, leave a comment and I will respond.

Hello, hello!

So I have a question for the NE sailors...lobster pots. How do they work? I would love to set one in the LI Sound and be able to pick up fresh lobster on my weekend travels out to the Sound. Any ideas?
