Hi Dave J here, We sail an Aquarius 21 and are based in Western South Dakota on a reserviour on the Cheyenne River.
That said my favorite sailing lake (so far) is the large (65,000 miles of shoreline, and over 14,600 islands) Lake of the Woods in the three corner area of Minnesota, Manitoba, and Ontario.
most of the islands are forested wilderness and the literally hundreds of fine anchorages scattered about the lake provide wonderful overnight (or weekend) getaway spots. A major event on the lake (sailing-wise) each year is the LOWISA (see www.lowisa.org) it's a week long regatta on the lake with daily distances of about 20-25 miles. Most race but a few participants cruise along just to enjoy the lake and the fun.

Im currently on Lake Conroe where I am part of the Lake Conroe Sailing Assoc. http://www.lcsaonline.net/, based out of Seven Coves Marina. The Conroe Yacht Club exist and from Walden, they enjoy regattas and other events. Fireworks are spectacular on the lake during holidays.
The Lake is ~20,000ac, ~20'-80' deep and can be quite violent most of the time. The entire south end of the lake is bulk headed while the north end is stumps, stumps and more stumps. The wind and traffic give rise to turmoil. Early mornings and late evenings are optimal time for being on the lake. planning for wind is day to day bases however. The only free boat ramp is at the end of F.M 830, otherwise one can find the San Jacinto River Autority Parks where payment is required ($10/day). Camping is allowed in some areas for additional monies ($20/day/primitive). Lake Conroe has some entertainment on a nightly basis. Not much really to brag about here! I would spend the time and money and head over to the Highland Lakes in Austin for a much better time for the whole family, and the dog.

Drive safely and dont forget to grease those bearings.

"Auto ascending setup is an interesting idea, though it takes a bit of fiddling around to get it right. Once it's dialed in, it actually works quite well."
