hey there,
does anybody know what the distance between the compass and the electronics should be? we are installing a new chartplotter and the only navpod we can find out make the chartplotter too tall. I really don't want to "Drive" via the chartplotter!
thanks,

wendy

I don't know of any standard recommended distance electronics should be mounted from a compass. However if you mount the chartplotter close enough to the compass to create deviation (error) you can create a deviation table to compensate.

To make a deviation table, just point the boat N, S, W, E and compare the pedestal compass reading to the "magnetic degrees" reading on your chartplotter. The difference between the two numbers is obviously your deviation, and keep the table handy so you can refer to it when necessary.
I’d suppose that a 28" minimum Compass - Chart Plotter separation would be advisable, and more would be better.
Twisting the power supply wires to the plotter will help some.
Consult you compass & chart plotter manufacturers for specific detailed installation instruction.

Deviation cards should be prepared, both with electrical equipment On and with it Off.

In order to minimize Deviation errors, a Magnetic Compass should be installed as far as possible from ferrous metal objects, and those generating magnetic fields;
- at least 28" (70 CM) from any object generating local magnetic fields
- at least 40" (1 M) from radio transmitters, motors, and large metal objects (engine)
