100 book challenge

Elementary schools throughout the nation participate in a reading program for which students get prizes for documenting 'x's number of 26 minute blocks of reading for pleasure. An enormous amount of time and money I'd spent on this quest to motivate kids to become better readers. More and more my personal reading has increased.

Previous yo this year I rarely read a book for pleasure but once every five years. Tonight I found myself switching among three genres. John E. Milligan's text… Continue

Marina and I drove down to the boat Thursday afternoon after I got off work.  Arriving at the dock we loaded up a cart with our gear, food, and water and proceeded to our slip.  While moving stuff from the dock to the boat Marina said she could hear a noise in the boat.  I guessed it was the dehumidifier running and told her so.  When we got inside it was clear that it was something else.  I quickly started down the electrical panel switching off everything one at a time until the sound…

It's a Hard Life

Poor SPRAY, back on the hard after an innocent, albeit expensive, mishap about 1/4 of a mile outside her slip. It seems the safety line thrown out the day before was not retrieved before setting off to join the Melbourne Yacht Club's annual seafood raft up. Just as SPRAY headed into the wind for the hoisting of the main, that suddenly aburpt coming to a halt engine sound went burrplllllllllllup. To which I responded, "oh shaboom, something is…

No, Amy, It Doesn't Get Better Than This . . .

Last Wednesday it was time to return to school for my final semester involved with traditional education.  When the week-end finally arrived I was rewarded with 3 days of being surrounded with the best group of beach cat sailors around. Having sailed with some of these guys and gals since my debut way back in the summer of 1980, it was a bitter sweet reunion as life takes its toll on all. Its Afterall, the camraderie that exists amongst this group keeps the old spirits alive as friendships…

Hatch left open; bunk now wet.

Boat withdrawal is painful.  It has been two weeks since I spent time on Kittiwake and I must confess it was not comfortable at all.  The heat and some medical concerns kept me at home worrying about how she was holding up during the severe thunder storms that were moving through the area.  Thankfully Kittiwake is moored in a marina where fellow dock mates look out for each…

For the Lady who Claims I am CRAZY

People say I'm no good, I'm crazy as a loon, cause I sail a 3 hulled sailboat and cruise it all by myself....

My apologies to Charlie Daniels for the minor plagarism but I got carried away with the confidence that comes from stepping outside my comfort zone while pursuing some fangled idea that has plagued me most of my life. No one in my family, immediate or ancestory, has had a kinship with the sea except for me. Where it came from I have no idea. When my…

I am HOME

Several bloggers have asked me where I am so I guess I need to clarify. I am home. Home in Indialantic in my nice concrete block, with 4 bedrooms, 3 baths,  living room, den, converted dining room to a reading room, kitchen, laundry room, two car garage, sewing area, and inground swimming pool. Aye, the good life. This is my home where I organize my sailing trips. What used to be day sails and races has become more intense long term sailing adventures as you all know.

The longer…

Sweet Smell of Success

Wit h the whole Bermuda trip a part of my personal history it is amazing at how life's little toils catcth up. Some might call it the old grind, but the heck with the Negative Nancy attitude. Every single moment whether you are out at sea, wrestling with your garage door that managed to get stuck between your car's bumper and its trailer hitch, or simply lazzing about a backyard swimming pool, there is joy.

Take today for an example. after waking up to soothing ool shower I realized I…

boat chores

Down to the marina early Friday morning to get started with boat chores.  First big effort was to remove a seriously rusted shackle from my secondary anchor rode.  I took it up to the marina’s shop to use my drill and cutting wheel to slice through a chain link as the shackle was so badly corroded that I couldn’t dismantle it.  Once that project was finished I carried the…

Well, 6 months ago, we announced that we were going to attempt the Pacific Cup, if we were declared cured of cancer. This week on Monday as well as Thursday for all intents and purposes, I was declared "Cured" of cancer and do not have to visit my doctor but annually for a checkup.

The preparations for the Pacific Cup, a race from San Francisco Yacht Club to Kaneohe Bay Yacht Club,…

Befuddling Blog

This blog is crazy, or is it me. My last posting was repeated at least 3 times. Let us just hope my sail home from Bermuda to Port Canaveral is less bewildering.

The forecast for the next several weeks, per Chris Parker, is southwest winds. If you do not know where Port Canaveral is, can you make an educated guess as to which direction it is from this beautifully located island.

After a week of checking things out on the bermudian islands several things are noted.

Beautiful Bermuda

Since our unscathed arrival last Monday, I have thought about the journey home. To tell you what an asset Maryanne is would be an understatement. Her demeanor keeps my attitude on an even keel. Her ability to troubleshoot is also calming. O.k.so I have an issue with over oiling,,,,

Met some guys on s/v golden brown from Brooklyn. The captain and crew are quite good looking but a little young for me. More importantly their spirits were high as they designed a plan for jury rigging… Continue
