my kat was safer than i was.
there is no way kat would have had as much trouble as did i--he was in the best of hands besides my own, as were my 2 boats.
teak is the ultimate non skid when left alone and treated properly.

come on down and see the differences between living in a marina and living on a boat in a roadstead mooring. is colder here ...we arenot protected from weather or waves. the documented temp has been 38 three times this year alone. i believe harry sails in warmer waters in the winter. i remain here most of the time unless i find an adventure ......

there werre 3 documented 38 degree days/nites hewre under our bridge. we have winds and all the good things non marina dwellers have. is cold . i use bare fereet as my usual deck shoppes. i am glad so many have had no problem with throw or scatter rugs in their sailboats. i have had opposing experience-even though i do keep one for my kat in my master stateroom under my bed, i donot regularly use throw rugs. latex is the backing used and is allergenic, grossly. not acceptable in the cases of latex sensitivity/allergy. i never knew where you lived, bella--i donot pay much attention unless one is my friend....

Throw rugs with the right backing are absolutely great. I have a 51 footer that is littered with them, galley, salon, and master stateroom. If nothing else, they help deaden noise, and protect my highly varnished soleplates from dirty feet. My crew, as well as myself have never had a problem with them sliding anywhere. Karen lives in an area where the temperature rarely gets below 40 degrees in the winter. In fact it’s currently 56 in San Diego. So what ever you need to do to stay warm and toasty….. Do it… and just have fun….

california has latitude problems and is not considered a tropical zone--is rather cold in winter--38 degrees often is the air temp, and the water temp does not rise above 56 degrees in winter--is hypothermia in 15 minutes. loss of coordination within 5 mins--i watched a naybore fall in and did save him before he died. he did lose coordination prior to rescue. there is no tropical zone within california's bounds. throw rugs actually throw the body into the built-ins inside the cabin of a boat and are dangerous. there have been broken bones and other niceties resulting from them. if the scatter/throw rugs appeal to someone, there is no talking them out of them until the time a hip or back is broken as a direct result. i weart uggs and keep my cabin sole safe. i wish i lived in a tropical area---but there arew no such places in cali. despite the name california, this is not a warm state in the winter. we have no gulf stream to temper our waters.

only challenge is in severer stormy weather--i donot do alcohol an di enjoy the mooring situation---the water in the caribean was wonderful and warrants returning...the only challenge is throw rugs slipping out from under foot and causing falls......i have none of that......havent tried the cook island as yet but sounds like somewhere i would enjoy...my naybores have more of a challenge boarding than do i as they seem to drink endless supplies of the alcohol causing floating face down--i rescue them .......

Karen,
Are you sailing in the Caribbean or still living under the bridge in San Diego. I have never seen anything in San Diego the warrants a challenge in boarding a boat in San Diego Bay. That is unless one has had five to many tequilas, no matter where the vessel is moored or tied up. I’m sure that every boat owner has had a challenge or two when boarding a vessel. When you really have the opportunity to engage in serious cruising, the daily challenges are endless. Try boarding you vessel when at anchor (tandem anchors) in 40 knot sustained winds, with six to eight foot sea in Cook Islands.

having my boat on a mooring rather than on aq dock is a challenge on occasion---even in the blowing gusty rainy storming high fetch water i get to kayak out to my formosa and climb the freeboard to gain entry--is a way different lifestyle than walking in a dock to the boat and stepping on board--no matter how tricky the step is----btdt--prefer mooring or anchoring out----but in the winter is a maneuver of dance choreographic proportions---timing is everything....especially with provisions---but i would not have it any other way....throw rugs slip and the individual is apt to break something other thsan the boat under those circumstances....i place the nonskid rubber stuff under any throw rugs on board and prevent the falls that killya---makes a difference--i have had such close calls on friends' boats without the nonskid under the throw rug......

Barbara,

I haven't had to crawl along the docks (yet) this year although I certainly did a couple of times last year.

I did unexpectedly spend the day on the boat when water levels where extra high and the wind was 30 gusting 45. *sigh* Got a parking ticket on my truck as a result. *grin* It was a nice day -- I plumbed my pantry and freezer and was able to make up lasagna and bake bread.

Ok I have to comment. I am in Boston now. The wind is blowing and I am thinking...... ok how am I going to get back up to the parking lot to go to work. It is real chilly out ......below 30 and last night when I came home it was drizzling out which immediately turned to ice! I slid from the gangway to the boat. Luckily it was not the usual 10ft tide. So now I am thinking I will probably crawl backup......guess I will have to look at the tide chart. As far as heat this year I am still using my reverse air( cruise air) still with one electric heater. Usually by Jan the reverse air freezes up and I can't use it anymore but this year I am in a different marina which has warmer water.....whoo hoo. Bella, my floor .......well I keep meaning to go get carpeting but haven't gotten there. I which I had enough amps for a heater in the bilge. So wool sock are on my feet.
Tom I didn't know you had an espar...cool. I will email ya.
