I can't imagine this to be happening. The GPS system is too useful for a break down to occour.
Good thing for the compass on the boat though.. :-)
Yes, I've heard about it. My guess is they'll have it under control by then. Military usually gets $$$ when they need it and this will scare the beejeebers out of enuf people so i'm not worried. Then again, I'm only toodling around the Bay. Also a firm believer of knowing how to use charts, compass just in case. Was told by a Coast Guard Aux. inst. that they were going to be getting rid of the paper/pencil nav./piloting course and going electronic...yikes! I say!!! should know both well.
Agreed. I believe we can never put our only trust into electronics. They're great for when they work.
But nothing beats knowing how to read a chart and use the compass. Our lives may depend on it.
Sounds like the agency in charge of the GPS system is politicking for a little more funding. Spread some doom and gloom, get a little wave of public support and viola......funding comes through.

The system is way to important to the military and commercial interests to be allowed to go down.

somedays I feel like it's ALL going down.
I contemplating starting to buy up paper charts. So when all those satellites crash into the sea, I can give a hand to those who can still read em.
Yup. don't toss out those old LORAN receivers just yet...
