Second set of lessons on the way

Well, I just signed up for the next set of classes, ASA 105, 106. These deal with advanced coastal navagation and we will make a passage from Ft. Lauderdale, FL to Bimini in the Bahamas. I will be doing these classes by myself, as my Dad said he has learned enough and I can show him anything else he needs to learn. I will admit, 4 courses with 4 exams in 5 days was almost too much. He has had enough of classes and I am very proud of him. He did not get sick and he studied like a trooper. However, as far as classes and learning go, I have just started my journey. This new set of classes should be interesting and I am looking forward to leaving FL as the fireworks crackle on the 4th of July. I am still looking and learning how to shop for a used Catamaran. I have one to look at, but aside from a sea trial, I beleive a marine survey is in order and I know nothing about them. I am learning, but with one shot at this one, I don;t want to screw it up. Any experience in this area is welome to be shared with me. Thats about it for now....Feel free to comment with your ideas and suggestions....Daniel

Speak to 3 surveyors and ask them their experience with the make and model of the vessel you are looking at. Also, speak with them about a complete survey of the engine. After the surveyor's assessment of the engine and the rigging, and you're still interested in the vessel, hire a master mechanic to survey the engine. Save yourself a lot of headaches. What size cat are you interested in ?

Best of luck in your new courses... I am sure you will enjoy them.
Also good luck in your search for a catamaran. If the one you are looking at doesn't pan-out, I have a friend in Brunswick, GA who is selling his Manta... a very nice one. Let me know if you would like his phone number.
