I have raced for many years, first time in Antigua was 1990. what I have seen over time is that the regatta acitivities, supposed to be focused on sailing, are being reduced (for some) to just another reason to get drunk and party. I haven't raced in New England in 20 years so I am not sure what they are like any more. I think the dilution of racing in favor of alcohol soaked sunburnt bodies, coming for a "caribbean" experience is just a shame. I went to Heinekein in St. Maarten last year and I won't go back again. It was ridiculous how badly boats were handled, and how many collisions there were. From friends and photos I saw this year, it was awful once again.
I KNOW first hand how hard you work all day to race, and coming back in to blow off steam is really no excuse. It is also partly the doing of the local race committee/chamber of commerce or whatever because they know a night gig will attract more people/more money.
I'll check out blue water web site, thanks for the tip.
I am curious as to your experiences in Antigua. Besides the great gelato, what did you think of the venue, and the parties? I have found that there was way too much late night stuff going on that detracted from the overall regatta. maybe with Stanford dropping out as a sponsor it was a better time this year. and, interested to know where you publish so I can have a look at your "in print" opinions.
Good for you! (Antigua Sailing Week) We'll have to miss it, though. We're already on our way up to the Virgins to prepare for the Atlantic Crossing. Wish you could join us at our departure party May 2 in Tortola!
You've got some nice pics here yourself. Whales, dolphins and wrecks oh my! Those locations make me jealous (and motivated). Nice boat, is that a Bristol?
