Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) is an arc-welding process that fuses (melts) metal by heating it with an electric arc created between a covered metal electrode and the metals being joined. Of the It is a fusion welding in which strong gas flame is used to generate heat and raise temperature of metal pieces localized at the place where joint is to be made. In this welding metal pieces to be joined are heated. The metal thus melted starts flowing along the edges where joint is to be made. welding operations are considered ''skilled trades,'' and the labor to perform these operations may be scarce. 2- Most welding processes are inherently dangerous because they involve the use of high energy. 3- Since welding accomplishes a permanent bond between the components, it does not allow for convenient disassembly. Spot welding is the type of resistance welding when the thermoelectric heat is generated, sequentially, at a (usually large) number of isolated points "spots," where the mating surfaces are pressed together by an external force during the whole welding process. From: Comprehensive Structural Integrity, 2003 Download as PDF About this page Spot welding involves three stages; the first of which involves the electrodes being brought to the surface of the metal and applying a slight amount of pressure. The current from the electrodes is then applied briefly after which the current is removed but the electrodes remain in place for the material to cool. Procedure for welding repair. Welding repairs based on the requirements, location, and service, are classified as the following types: 1. Production weld repair. 2. In-service weld repair. Why you need to perform the repair, could be due to an inherent material defect, a process defect during/ after welding (manufacturing defects), or in Resistance spot welding (RSW) is commonly used in manufacturing and automotive industry; because of their advantages such as high speed and high production, Schematic of the Resistance Spot Welding process 2.3.1 PARAMETERS IN RESISTANCE SPOT WELDING 2.3.1.1 Welding Current Normally, welding current is important parameter in the welding Welding process W/mm2 (Btu/sec-in2) Gas Tungsten Arc Welding 0.7 Submerged Arc Welding 0.95 Flux-cored Arc Welding 0.9 • Spot welding - Low carbon steel up to 3.2mm - For large components: reinforcing part or flanges - Access room for welding - Overlap is required 28 Common Process Variants Friction Spot Welding [12] Mazda Friction Spot Welding [13] Friction Spot Welding Lap Welding Lap joints are common in friction stir welding Watch out for "hook" defect - an uplift of surface oxides into the joint. "Hi All, french built 2010 43 has been very dry down below but now a slow leak has occurred which is showing at the limber holes under the floor board in forward cabin. Bilge pump goes every 3hrs for 20secs. Not sure if it’s fresh/rain water or…"
