My boat is 30 years old, 15+ coats of bottom paint, and now I need to get it all removed. I live in Huntington Beach, and have a quote from Marina Shipyard in Long Beach -- very expensive.

Have been thinking of going to Ensenada to get the work done. Any other ideas out there?

Hi there,

I don't know anything about work done in Mexico, but try a quote from Cabrillo boat shop, 1500 Pier C, in Long beach, seems to be more reasonable than most in our area!

I had a nice conversation with the folks at Dana Point about this very subject. I will be doing this very thing next spring on my Columbia 28. They let owners work on their boat - but you should talk to them first. My plan is to use a Marine "Shaver" (Planer) and get the top layer of crud off: then repaint.

I would prefer to do it myself - but out of curiosity - what would the charges be in Ensenada??

FWIW... I have another boat that requires MAJOR work - and so using the Marine Shaver is just an added benefit. I bought mine on ebay.. here is a link http://www.paintshaver.com/marineshaver.html *see the video*

My considerations were that since I also have a "big boat" in my back yard - which needs serious work - I **DID NOT** want bottom paint on the ground. I also wanted to have something that would get the paint removed fast - with a vacuum system.

Fast removal is good. Scraping or sanding is nuts... !!! if you can avoid...

good luck.....
