We've crossed wakes with the Picton Castle several times. We've had opportunity to talk over a few beers with crew since this tragedy and they tell a very disappointing story. It seems that safety drills and procedures are still pretty much non existant.

I read a book about the first voyage of the Picton Castle, written by a crew member. I wish I could remember the name of the author. I got the book at the library. It was an eye-opener to read about the conditions of sailing on this ship as a crew member and a passenger. I did not throw a good light on captain Moreland at all.

If I was going to spend the $ 30 000 that passengers have to pay for a years voyage and if, as a passenger , had to work just as hard as the crew with very little time off for relaxation, I'd not choose this vessel to sail on.

I saw a documentary on the Picton Castle on TV that was aired after Laura Gainey was lost at sea and this documentary confirmed what Veranda is saying that safety training of crew and passengers is very poor.
