Getting Ready for Winter

Someone else just posted a message asking for tips about winterizing. Here in Sunny Florida we winterize by changing our weekly night racing to Sunday afternoons, leave work early on Friday to sail down the river where we drop anchor and sleep late on Saturday morning. Around noon or 1 pm, we clean the bottom of the boat as our excuse to go for a refreshing swim with the dolphins in the continually shifting waters at Sebastian Inlet. Then, around 4 pm we pull up the anchor and drift over to a… Continue

Explore. Dream. Discover.

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."

The O town gets ready for a COLD front!

If the weather predictors are to be believed, in 2 days time, Touristtown will be getting 72 degree weather. This after a really hot 2 weeks. Hot even for us.

I guess we will all be getting our parkas out of storage...no, really. We JUST don't like cold weather. In fact, we HATE it. And cold to us is below 75 degrees. LOL This is why I will probably always sail in the south, especially because Florida is the BEST SAILING STATE IN THE US!!!

My adventures with Valentina's engine (Part I)

It's funny how life knocks you around, sometimes to unexpected situations and places. A month ago, I thought Valentina was ready to go back on the water after two and a half years of refitting. It’s not finished, but not having to pay the boatyard fees and been able to use the boat would have been great. I did my last checks on all the systems, and among other things, I let the engine run for a good one hour so. Everything seemed to work fine. The engine started easy (after two years without… Continue

Born sailors

Strong finish this season with my 10 and 12 year old girls. I told them that they had to draw on everything that they'd learned in "all their years at sea" and sail from Deer Harbor to Friday Harbor, WA - I would be on board just to watch.

"Whaaaat?? We can't - "

"You've done everything, at one point or another," I said reassuringly. "Now you just have to put it all together in the right order."

The oldest was surprised how quickly the outboard pull started. They… Continue

And the Prevaling Wind is from What Direction?

Yesterday was the second race of the Frostbite series. I wasn't expecting any crew to show up; it's been difficult to get folks to commit to a weekend, since we really hadn't planned on racing this series in the first place. But I headed over to the boat, figured I could get the jib up at least. If anyone showed up, I'd go ahead and race. Otherwise, I'd just head home to do the homework I was avoiding.…

If it sounds too good to be true. . .

Sitting in the last row in an auditorium designed to hold 500 people, I could barely make out the features on the face of my professor. His message, though rings as loud today as it did when he first spoke it. The course was a requirement, "Personal Finance." I debated whether to take basket weaving or flute lessons but decided to be smart and learn how to manage my money. Fast forward 33 years and I'm still making credit card mistakes. Although I am proud to say that for the past 13 years I… Continue

"Auto ascending setup is an interesting idea, though it takes a bit of fiddling around to get it right. Once it's dialed in, it actually works quite well."

"Michael, From experience over three keel boats a fully battened main is almost a requirement. Not only will it make dropping the sail into the boom bag far easier it certainly reduces any flogging and vastly lengthens the life of the sail. While…"
