Profile Information:

Profile Type:
Sailor
Homeport:
Jersey City, NJ
About Me:
I've been a sailor and boat owner since 1997, and currently sail an O'day 322 out of Newport Marina in Jersey City, NJ. I'm New York City born and raised, but currently living in Monmouth County, NJ. Counting down the years till I can leave my job and the coastline behind for who-knows-where. For me, music and sailing go hand in hand (the guitar goes where I go). C'mon over for a visit, if you get a chance.
Current location:
Third rock from the sun
Looking to:
Connect with other sailors. (Aren't we all?)

Yes its one in the same nice to hear from you Hope we get to chat more on sailing
  • Franc

Must've gottn drenched out there yesterday... :-)))
  • Pete

Drenched barely begins to describe it. But as I told my wife, I would much rather have gotten soaked while out on the water than sitting at the dock. Besides, there was no lightning, barely any thunder, and only a few larger-than-average hailstones, so the rain was more of a soggy inconvenience than anything else.
  • Pete

I almost forgot to mention -- wait till you get a look at the photo of Theo in a hot pink foul-weather jacket. Hubba hubba!
  • Franc

yep. that's the plan. more details as the date approahes!
  • Barbara

Thank you Pete, I need all the incouragement I can get! I will put this in my pocket for the day. I have been starting with buzzing around in the dingy in the harbor. Yesterday I had quite the adventure in it getting stuck in the rain wind and hail storm, it was fun............~Barbara
  • Sally

Hi Pete! Thank you for the encouraging words! I will inceed take you up on your offer and ask questions about my boat. I see you are in Monmouth County in Jersey. I grew up on the other side of the state on the Delaware, but spent most of my summers in Sea Girt where my Dad worked at the military academy there. What a wonderful part of the Garden State! Hope you're enjoying some good sailing! Best, Sally
  • Franc

Hope you are enjoying the Northeast O'day Owners' rOnDAYvous! We miss you here at the marina!!
  • Sally

Hi Pete! Am glad to hear the rOnDAYvous was such a success! Wish I could have been there but I'm trying very hard to be disciplined and stay in focus on my house which is up for sale (worse time ever, I know.) So I'll keep my fingers crossed to make next year's event. Are the dates set yet? It'll be the first event on my 2009 calendar! Best, Sally
  • Franc

Hey, Pete, did you get the details for tomorrow?
  • Franc

Slack time at the Verrazzano Narrows is at 10:23am tomorrow. After that, the current is with us until 4:40pm so I was thinking about leaving Newport at around 11 or so...
  • Franc

Yikes! Good luck with the repair! We'll get there late tonight so we'll touch base first thing in the am tomorrow.
  • LOLA

Well Pete not knowing how to sail, what else could I do but fix up the interior...thing is all that has to come down when i sail....the weather here has been tricky w storms,,,
  • Chris

Hi Pete!! Yes it's Chris from Blarney!! I still miss her and question letting her go all the time. Like I said life changed and there just wasn't time. Kids are getting older and maybe, just maybe there will be another boat in our future.

My boat is a 1960 Pearson Triton ...West Coast Variety...made in Sausalito, CA...and much superior to the East coast variety.

Guitar-wise I presently have 9....( four are 12's)...been playing mostly folk since 1960.
Best two are a Taylor 815CE (prototype) made in 1989 and a Morris B-50 12-string...hand made Japanese guitar ...les tha 100 made over a 6 year period and made with Brazilian Rosewood back and sides ...never imported to the US.
It is basically a 12 string copy of a late 1930 Martin D-45..with all the abalone and such. Best sounding 12 string I ever played.
  • Dr John D.

Me too...I play whatever suits the mood..Eagles etc.

I keep 2 of my guitars in Seattle with one daughter
(Gianinni classical, 1955 Gibson ES 125 ...my first guitar)

and 2 with my other daughter in San Francosco
    (60's Greco 12-string and a 1997 Gibson CL-30 Deluxe)

I also have a Jan 1968 Yamaha `12 string FG 230...the first moth of the first year they imported them here..plus a Sebring...Korean knockoff of a Gibson L-5......told by several Jazz Gitarist, that it is the best playing L-5 they ever played (including Gibsons)

Actually I bought a '77 Ovation Pacemaker 12-string two weeks ago, and it is probably the easiest 12 string I have played.

    I sold my Bacon and Day 5-string about 1 1/2 years ago('37)
I'm presently looking at several tenors.

Incidently, I'm a retired dentist/dental professor....bu now am a professor at a small private college (Biology/Physics), so I have my summers off.
  • Franc

Hope to see you and Janice on the water this weekend!
  • Andrea

Hey - where have you been? Stop by when you are around, we miss you guys. Are you headed to Annapolis this weekend?
  • PCarrico

Looks like you're having massive fun on with your boat!
  • carole lowry

You can now sail the Barnagate. The chanal was dredged this summer. The Bennie 373 has a 4'5" draft.

I'm inviting NJ sailors who might be at Liberty Landing to join a new group. Just search for Liberty Landing under the Groups tab.

  • Dr John D.

I'm up the Housatonic, past the Route one and Metro N railroad bridges.... But its about as safe an area regarding storms as you can get.

Being a dockominium I have security from exorbitant marina fees.

I grw up on Staten Island....know Jersey City well....My borther went to St Peter's College.
  • Banana Wind

Hey big daddy ...its been awhile ...hope you and the ole Oday are still sailing along gracefully in the world. SAy ..do you have any good feelers out for any Odays out there for sale? It seems the buddy I was tellin you about awhile back lost his Oday 32' to Hurricane IKE down here ..he's still got the vessel for parts ...but the keel broke off and of course the mast is history and the rigging a mess. Im not sure what his budget is ....but I know he sures misses sailing on his baby ..affectionately known as "Day O".
  • Banana Wind

Hey Pete! Thanks for getting right back to us on that ....hey that's a nice center cockpit on that weblink(I have 2 other buds that still have their center cockpit Odays after the hurricane) ,,but I forgot to mention that my other bud's boat was just like yours ..a sloop rig ...and thats kinda what he's wanting to find again ,,,we preciate ya ,,in any case! THXamundo ...
  • Banana Wind

thanks Pete ! That's a super specimen of an Oday for sure ...i've graciously passed the link on to my friend here. Preciate' ya keeping an eye out for one !
  • Suky

I'm always up for a party ! Love your photos, especially the one from the mast. Thanks for the heads up on the ODay get together. Right now, I'm trying to find either a cheap or giveaway trailer for 17 foot daysailer.
  • Terri

    Got that right... ;-)
  • Christine Kling

    Hi Pete,

Glad to hear you like the books. I've been going to ThrillerFest in NYC for the last three years and in the summer of 2007 I sailed up with a friend on his Ron Holland 43 and we docked there at the Newport Marina in Jersey City. I'm in blue and the others are authors Shane Gericke, Zoe Sharpe and her husband, Andy. Do you recognize the background?

  • Suky

Thanks for your comment Pete.... soon you'll be sailing ~!~*!*~*! ~!

Ahoy pete, Yeh,Ive been on the bottom a few times but with 3' draft board up I can heal her over a little and usally sail or motor off. Ive been on Barnegat since I was a kid. I had a tartan 34 before the lazyjack. Now I looking to sell to buy a pearson 365 4.6' draft. Because now I'm retired and I'm out of here. One boat or the other I hope to be cruising to Maine the summer. Hank

  • Suky

Keeping dry ? THinking about sailing on Great South Bay ? what does your boat draw ?
  • Suky

    Hi Pete,
I'm definitely planning to go to the Rendevous in July but not with my boat since you said plenty of boats to sail with. I'm still searching for a trailer, something will probably turn up soon. I had hoped to sail this week but weather is yuck.
  • LOLA

    As to the MEETUP GROUP
Pete this area is for people that have met...so take photos of the MEETUP then post here. You have a Good Idea. ...MAYBE DO A FORUM TO GET IT GOING?
  • Pete

EmmieLou is going back in the water on Wednesday (4/29)! Hot damn! Back in her slip at Newport Marina on Saturday. Methinks this is going to be a really fine sailing season. If you're in the neighborhood, stop by for a visit.
  • Marlene A. Sassaman

    Hi Pete,
I'm starting to like those aperitifs,,,,though I'm not as much of a dog lover, which causes strife with me and my husband. Maybe if I could find a little 10 pounder who didn't shed I'd join the puppy on board crew. Nice slide show.

    Hey Pete,
Send me your phone #. I'm not sure if I will have my e-mail on the trip. I raced a Hobie 16 with the Sandy Hook Cat Club a few summers ago and love the area. I'm sure we'll be in touch if I make landfall. :-)
  • Scott

Hey Pete, Thanks for the comments. I just finished replacing all the glass. The last two were the bent ones, ( head, aft berth) I only paid $200.00 for both so i was happy about that. Rudy at D&R Marine told me that he has a brand new top covered glass for the capanion way. It only has a very small knife cut in it, so he can't sell it new. Might be able to pick it up cheap. I don't know if you know Rudy, he worked at O' Day for a number of years and when they went out of business he bought alot of the molds and parts for the O' Day's

Hey Pete! Sorry havent commented on yer audition in the group till now. Had to get some internet issues resolved. Upon reading yer song, I imagined the ride at Disney world "It's a small world", and when I finally got to listen to yer MP3, I related to Puff The Magic Dragon song. Both are good things. Damn good things to me for I find them both spitual moments.
Thanks for yer contributions and takin me back to another place and another time.

Ive been playin the violin like a fiddle, was takin lessons, till life pinched me, but still practice what I know and would love to be able to play when Im supposed to. LOL.

    write on!
  • ___/)ances With Sails

Great song, yer "Buttefly." Aint it somethin how expressions of the smallest things, the most vulnerable, life of a lower order seem th grandest. Powerful!
I wanna be a better song writter. Oneday I'll work on that at anchor.
  • Suky Cannon

Great! It was worth it ! Terrific guitar too !
  • Suky Cannon

wow... it's coming up... I'm excited.... I won't be bringing the boat though. Hope you'll print up some lyric sheets so we can sing along to your tunes...
  • Scott

Hi Pete, Have you heard of anybody using a asymmetrical sail on a 322?
  • Banana Wind

Just droppin thru to say howdy from the south! Yes ....we still ALL live after all these pesky hurricanes! Hope all is well up on the east coast.....

  • Joe Goodrow

Hi Pete, Personally I would be comfortable sailing anywhere in or around Buzzards Bay. Cutty Hunk Island is perfect, Upper long Island Sound. New London Harbor or Mystic Harbor, Perfect. Weather permitting. Joe
