SWF, 56, world cruiser and ex professional crew. Now living and casually sailing in SE Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay. I still have the wanderlust to see more of the world.....I just hate when work gets in the way!
Current location:
Hampton VA
Destinations visited:
Vanuatu, Tonga, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Caribbean, Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire, Venezuela, Columbia, San Blas Islands, Central America, Pacific coast of Mexico, East and West Coasts of USA, Bahamas. There are still lots of places to go on my list!!
Looking to:
Would like to do more cruising with the right person.
Presently I have a Bayfield 25, small boat but a ton of fun. Need a shallow draft around Toledo. Many times I am one of the few sailboats that can leave the club docks when we have strong winds that blow the water away from the west end of Lake Erie.
Hi. Thanks for responding. We will definitely be passing your way enroute our home port in NC. Our plan is to head back in 3 to 4 weeks. I was in the navy and stationed at Norfolk so we sailed around your area quite a bit. We miss Tidewater. Are you currently sailing?
Hank
Hi Bobbi. Bequia is one of my favorite places. I will probably be here and the Tobago Cays for most of a month if a storm does not chase me south. Next I will go down to the south coast of Grenada and probably stay there for a month before going to Trinidad where friends are planning a birthday party for me in early October.
Hi Bobbi, nice to hear from you. Yes, I passed through the middle and lower Chesapeake when bringing my Albin home in July...usualy in Annapolis several times a year. Where do you live? Best regards,
Hello Bobbi;
There are no EMD's in the photos but you are close the photo of just the two engines are my favorites,Fairbanks Morse-38D-8 1/8 X10 opposed pistons, 1600 Horsepower each the photo that I think you are in reference to is the one with me standing (lovingly) between two of the four Cleveland Diesels 12-278a's
these were the predicessors to the EMC's wich became EMD.Its nice to know that you have some idea of these magnificent Engines.
How did you achieve this knowledge ?

Hi, I see you are also in the Women's group. How far are you from Myrtle Beach, SC where Lola has her boat? I'm considering her offer to visit and help sail during Thanksgiving weekend .... why don't you touch base with her and perhaps we can all coordinate. Could use the extra knowledge, experience and hands :)
Hi Bobbi
Well it looks like we may soon be neighbours, I just took on a project at NOB and am moving down to tidewater (whoo-hoo) don't know if I will be be at Little Creek or Willoughby, I was in Little Creek last Thursday, bunch of us started for Bermuda then took a pounding coming down the bay, Cracked the hull, didn't know it at the time then lost our alternator about 140 miles out, spent a couple of days just drifting with the gulf stream, then made for beaufort, winds picked up to 25 knots so we stayed in beaufort everyone jumped ship so my son and I started out last Monday, we lost a bolt in the engine and lost our oil so we went under sail, finally after 36 hours of fighting a nor-Easter we caved in and called the USCG they sent out a helicopter and then two ctters arrived, we got the leak under control got the engine started however an hour after everyone left we lost oil pressure again, (that was when I found the missing bolt) thank goodness for JB Weld, fixed that and limped back to Little Creek, filled up with oil and walked over to the food Lion, That whole area has changed, and came on back up the bay, almost called you but then I remebered you were busy, anyway things are fixed etc and I will be starting a new job on November 15th,
Ron
Hi Bobby,
Thanks for the note.
I see (like all the other good people here) that the infliction for sailing goes to the bone with you also.
Sweet list of places visited.
My places were more like a migratory pattern doing the same regattas over the years. Were your places visited on one long extended cruise, or visits to cruising charters or friends?
Ciao,
Pete
Hello Bobbi, Sorry I did not get to respond to your earlier message, shame on me.....
Yes the Freedom's are a real easy boat to sail with the self-tending jib and quite distinctive without stays. We keep the boat at Taylor's Landing.
Robert.
Yes, I can certainly see the crew working hard so the owners can play. I have often though I should have really explored that option when I got out of the Navy...while alll my seatime and skills were fresh. Now studying for my Capt exam so I at least have a few more options. Going to work the Corp life for a few more years (till daughter out of school) then see what's there for alternative income sources.
Thanks for the update on the sunken ship. It's been many years since I did any diving. When I was in my early 20's I worked for a diving supply shop but then had to get a real job.

Hi Bobbi...u asked about my sidetrips in SouthAmerica. No moto in Chile because the completion date of the Atlantic 57 I was there to deliver to San Diego was too much up in the air.
As far as the K2 base camp climb from the China side, I nixed that because of the sad economy. That trip would have cost me over $12k.
So I'm sitting tight and waiting for a delivery job.
Once the economy turns around, my next adventure will be a 3-4 month motorcycle trip through South America.

Sorry it has taken so long to get back.....I don't check into this site much at all.
I named my boat "MANTA" after having dove with these beautiful being for a long time, and being underwater, and looking up at MANTA made giving her the name easy......she looks just like one from below.
About a Website.....hummmm, I haven't a clue how to even get one started.
The Giant Pacific Manta's in the Sea of Cortez are almost gone. They have almost been wiped out by the Mexican fisherman. I know of only two near Catalan Island, and they have noticable harpoon scars and are very shy!
