I keep a Columbia 8.7 in Urbanna, and will be there for the Oyster Festival. Urbanna is on the Rappahannock River about 12 miles from the Bay. By land, I64 to 33E, to 17N to 33E and turn left at the sign. Can't miss it.Just Google Urbanna Oyster Festival. Second Weekend of November. Plenty of food, music, good times. Room to anchor in the harbor if you get there by Thursday, or early Friday. I'm at Urbanna Harbor Yacht Club docks, #15. Stop by.
Welcome Bill,STPABR and /)ances With Sails. Look forward to seeing you on the water. I'm going sailing today out of Urbanna. Little chilly...but that's sailing in Virginia!!!!!
Been sailing the upper bay for the last 8 yrs. Had been out of Skjack Cove on the Sassafras River. Bought a new boat and moving it to Baltimore Inner Harbor in the spring.
Hey Mario, that happened to me a few years back, except I had a friend on the dock that threw me a line and I pulled myself up. It was a struggle, but what was most embarrassing was that there was a latter about 10' from where I fell in... should have been paying attention? (and it was winter too)
Hi all, Home based out of Baltimore, sailing the middle bay area. Frequent haunts include Annapolis, St Michaels and Rock Hall. In withdrawal for some sweet spring breezes!
Mike and Julie,
Welcome. I sail out of Urbanna and Deltaville, a bit south of you. Weather has been a little bit sailing unfriendly, but I've managed a couple of day sails this winter. Maybe we'll see you out there.
Welcome all new members to Chesapeake Sailors. It would be fun for everyone to meet up sometime this spring. I will be trying to catch up with some of you to help with planning a meet & sail activity. Safe sailing to all....Gaye Currier s/v Mad Dash 9
Hi all, I'm looking for homeport in upper Chesapeake as close as possible to Philadelphia. I'm considering Havre de Grace but I'd really like to find a place on the Eastern Short north of Rock Hall. I'd prefer not to have to drive more than an hour - an hour and 1/2 max. RIght now, I want the option to either launch from trailer my 17 foot ODay, or find a reasonably priced slip. The slip would be ideal. Would love to hear from you. Thanks.
We live NW of Philly and it took us 1:40 to get to marinas on the Sassafras River in Georgetown on the Eastern Shore. We were at Skipjack Cove but there are several others in the area Georgetown Yacht Basin, Sailing Associates, Sassafras Harbor and Duffy Creek. There are two launch ramps, the first is a public ramp the other is a double ramp at Duffy's. The Sassafras is a beautiful, but busy river. It will take you apx 45 mins to get to where the river opens up although many sail in and out the entire way. Georgetown is a very nice area and we spent the last 8 years there. We decided a change of pace was in order and are moving to Baltimore's Inner Harbor. Let me know if you'd like to know more.
Mike
I'm going to attempt another planned cruise on the Chesapeake in September. Sheila (wife,Admiral) and I on our Columibia 8.7, and Martin Duffy on his CS27, possibly one other couple on their Hunter 46 (?). Any and all are welcome. No set agenda as yet, just attempting to sail as far north as possible in a couple of weeks. Our starting point will be Urbanna, Duffy will be Deltaville. Anyone to the south or east can meet up with us in Dville area, or along the northern route, probably on the western shore. It would be great to make it to Baltimore with stops at St Mary's, Solomons, Annapolis. Perhaps more or less. Then back down the eastern shore , Oxford, Onancock, Tangier? Just playing it by ear at this point.
Start date, Sept.21,2009.
Reply here with suggestions or comments. I'll post something on the Columbia Yacht Owners wall as well.
We are going as well. Friday for sure, maybe Thursday if I can work it out. We are heading to the SSCA Gam in Annapolis next weekend also. We've never been to one and it looks like a great learning opportunity and well as a good chance to meet others. Hope to meet some of you there!
Yes, bella, thanks, I've been pointed to baconsails before. And you're right, it might be a bit busy during the weekend for me to find out something on-site from them.
Will be out on the Bay from May 26 to May 31 if anyone is interested in meeting up. Trying for either Tangier or Norfolk....wind being the controlling factor. Email me at Radicalcy(at)yahoo.com
Well we did the trip. Deltaville to Reedville, Reedville to Tangier, and Tangier to Crisfield. All fantastic sailing. Got stuck in Crisfield waiting for a front to pass. Ate lots and lots of Soft Shell crabs there, and mounds of crab cakes while we were on Tangier. Definitely a "do again" cruise.
We also did the trip with the hope of meeting up with Larry and Marty. Was not to be. Got a late start due to family meet up with Bro Bob daughter at Sparrow Point CC pool on Saturday, May 28,
Sunday, May 29 U/W from Tidewater Marina, Baltimore MD. Winds light, S-SW 5-10 Knots. and dropping while tacking for Bay Bridge. Decided to raft up with friends coming up from the Bahama at Gibson Island near the horse farm. Crowded anchorage, but our rafting partners pick a great spot in 11 feet of water with a breeze through the tree line.
Monday May 30 U/W for Herring Bay South. Winds 5-10 Kts and dropping. Motor sailing to anchor in 9 feet of water off Harrington Marine South, on Herring Bay. Winds pick up in the evening to SW 10-15 Kts. Had to hail a drifting a small cabin cruiser drifting down on us with no one in the cockpit. Skipper put some clothes on and started the motor to move away. His bow anchor would surely have left a scar in our hull if not worse.
Tuesday, June 1 U/W for Solomon Island. Winds SW 10-15 Kts. Arrived at Solomon Island at 1700 and moored at "Z-A" for boats over 35 feet. Dhingy in for showers and garage dump. Drink beer at the pool in light rain. Had dinner at "Captain's Table" end of back creek. Roast Beef great, Fish was fishy smelling, mussels for Capt. Bob. A/C continue to act up and stop after a few hours.
Wednesday, June 2 U/W for Great Welcomico River. 1800 anchored in 7 feet of water. Oder of fish factory over welling. Closed up the boat. A/C continue to be unreliable.
Thursday, June 3 U/W for Jackson Creek, Deltaville. Moored at sip D26 next o metal covering shed for boats. Slip deck shaky.
Friday June 4 1300, Bob Meyers in "TRI-ONE" arrived and anchored in the bay behind our slip. Attended Pot-Luck dinner of Beneteau Rendezvous attendees. Attempted to back flush A/C raw water lines 2 outlet sides. No improvement. Determined the impeller/armature and shaft is touching the side walls and stopping.
Saturday, June 5 West Marine has A/C pump in stock and had Deltaville Boat yard remove old and install new. May need only nylon spare parts of impeller and shaft in the future repair.
Went to Rendezvous Dinner and "Castaway" contest with costume T-Shirts of film crew of Castaway. Won first prize.
Sunday, June 6, 0600 U/W for Herring Bay. Winds W-NW 10-15 Kts and building. Approach Solomon Island with weather closing in from NW with tornado winds up to 50 MPH. 1300 Headed for Solomon Island with heavy rains arriving as we head for Hog Island tripod. Visibility less than 1 mile, turn on Running lights, using Raymaine chart plotter to navigate. 1600 Entered Solomon Island and the rain and wind stopped. Anchored in 7 feet of water back beyond mooring buoys. Wind W-NW all night.
Monday, June 7 U/W for Baltimore. Wind NE 5-10 Kts, motor sailing. 1000 tied up to Tidewater slip.
Got out for our first sail of the year, February 18. Temp was 60+ and wind was SW 15kts . 6 hours of great sailing, even if it was tacking back and forth in the Rappahannock River.
Anne, Not much sailing past Tappahannock, as it really is like a snake. The river is navigable all the way to Fredricksburg, but the channel gets a bit hairy. But between Tappahannock and the Bay, it's beautiful. One or two dog legs with all the searoom in the world...
I sail out of Broad Creek, Deltaville, just a mile off the Bay .
All of a sudden...it's SPRING! 75 beautiful degrees where I am in Pennsylvania. Our bonfire is scheduled for tomorrow (not with a club, just a few friends at home with good food, cocktails and old socks to get things kicked off), our marina called today to say our boat will be first in (advantages of procrastinating in the fall), and we have scheduled our first long weekend cruise to the Wye River. It's not far from our home port in Rock Hall but we've never visited. Anyone else anxious to launch? Any big plans this season?
I headed out one beautiful weekend in February. Now my boat is on the hard, getting the topside and deck painted and a new electric engine put in. Hopefully, the rain won't slow down the former and I'll have her back in the water in a few weeks.
great boat. most interested in keeping up with your project. you might wish to post updates in the the CAL sailboat sforum here and on cal_boats@yahoogroups.com

We took it out for a spin yesterday and it performed beautifully. It was definitely quieter than the 9.9 HP outboard that I’ve been using lately, and, with the engine compartment completely opened so I could check things as we went, it made less noise the diesel I took out last year. So I’m guessing it’ll be a lot quieter once I put the step back in place. We could definitely talk to each other without shouting while it ran, and hear the music without blasting it.
I haven’t stress tested the batteries yet, to see how far I can go on a charge. But that will happen in a couple of weeks when I take the boat from Yorktown down to Portsmouth for Cock Island in a couple of weeks. I am going to have a backup generator, just in case (can you say ‘hybrid’?).
No solar panels yet. I’m lucky enough to have a way of charging It while at the docks, so I’m not completely off the grid. And most of my boating is done from this location; I don’t cruise away from home much. But it is *so* nice to not have the diesel/gas/oil/petroleum product smell out of the cabin!
Doing a 4 day trip starting Aug 12, return Aug 15. Deltaville,Va to Onancock,Va. Maybe Tangier Island or Great Wicomico/Mill Creek, or Cape Charles. Wind and weather will decide. I have room for one crew, and of course we welcome all and any on your own boat. So far, 2 boats, both single handed.
Planning again to sail with brother on Breezing Up, August 27-September 7. Hope go make St. Michael's while anchoring in San Domingo Creek. Give us a hail if in the area.
