Right - St. Joseph is on the south side of the St. Joseph river, and Benton Harbor is on the north side. I recommend West Basin marina for a guest slip. Other options are Harbor Isle marina or Pier 33 (but make sure you specify that you have a sailboat or they will give you one you can't get to). When do you think you might come? I will be cruising for much of the summer, but if I'm in St. Jo I would be happy to help you out.

I have always stayed in my own slip in St. Joe during the 4th of July because I was pretty sure it would be hard to find space somewhere else. You could probably find one if you came early (before the 4th). I don't know where S. Haven does their fireworks show. St. Joe does ours off the S. breakwater. People on the beach have great seats. Many boats anchor off the breakwater. We sit on our boat in the marina and have a great seat without the hassle. S. Haven is a great place, but there is nowhere to anchor. St. Joe has a little more anchorage, but not much. Some boats tie up inside the harbor, in the St. Jo river, along the riverbank. Seems to work well for them, but I haven't done it myself.

Derek, glad to meet you! You would have a great time sailing the east shore of Lake Michigan. There are good harbors every 25 miles or so. The closest place to you would probably be Michigan City. There's a large marina there. Next stop, going north, would be New Buffalo, a cute little town. Then comes St. Joseph - great beach, nice town, great family place. Then South Haven - a bit more of a party town than St. Joe, but a fun place to visit, with a fine municipal marina. Let me know if you are looking for more info. I posted a cruising log of our 2006 trip that might be interesting to you. How old are your kids? Do you like to anchor out or berth in a marina? Do you like the more remote and quiet destinations, or the party places?

"Michael, From experience over three keel boats a fully battened main is almost a requirement. Not only will it make dropping the sail into the boom bag far easier it certainly reduces any flogging and vastly lengthens the life of the sail. While…"
