How did you transition? Did you sell your house? Did you sell your possessions?

I can sure use help with this. My retirement date is set for Dec. 20.

My best friend helped me sort through all the stuff.. the books and art were the hardest. Otherwise, sorting it took forever.  I kept a few first editions, took photos of the art, sold some of it, asked friends if they'd like to hang some, gave away some of my favorite things to friends that I visit alot. Best thing was finding a woman who had a shop and she came to the house, and took what she wanted and make me an offer. Boys and Girls Club is good for donations.
A storage unit with things properly labeled is good so you can get to them if you want. Shelves in the storage unit are good. I wish I could have sold my home but 2008, the market just didn't support selling, but I did find a good tenant.

Make sure you have a strobe for your life vest, jack lines, a personal epirb and a boat epirb, plenty of oil and fuel filters, spare starter relay, goodies to give away as you travel. I think if I was going to do a lot of ocean sailing, I would also invest in survival suit.

I'm heading south again, now in North Carolina. I'll give you a holler if it looks like I'll be close to Melbourne. Going to go south of Miami and explore the Berry's and Abacos.

Sold house and possessions(1999) as we did not want to repeat problems with renting. As a result we missed the huge price jump in house value in our old town(>200%). Ended up buying an investment house in 2006 just to keep toes in the water.

We probably should have kept the house but glad we sold all the stuff we had collected over the years. Met many folks with good and bad tales about both sides of this decision.

Tough call, hope you make the right one for you.

Cheers..

Just moved aboard two months ago and retired three weeks ago.

Called the Salvation Army and told them to bring the bid truck!

Sold house, put furniture and things that we want to use again in a house in long term storage at a moving company. They packed in wooden shipping containers like those used on international moves. It all will be stored in a climate controlled facility.

Have not missed anything. My wife and I are enjoying the boat life. We are members of a yacht club and it is nice to have all the facilities at our use. Found a local place that does "wash and fold" to handle laundry.

We are preparing to head out cruising sometime this winter .

Good luck
